Feature Suggestion: Opt-In Time Awareness Between Chats

:wrench: Feature Suggestion: Opt-In Time Awareness Between Chats

Summary:
Allow users to opt-in to a feature where ChatGPT can be aware of how much real-world time has passed between conversations. This simple addition would significantly improve continuity in long-term chats, especially for ongoing projects, health tracking, or task reminders.

:light_bulb: How it Works:

  • Users toggle the feature on or off at any time
  • This could start as ‘elapsed days’ but could optionally support hours later, depending on user settings
  • Enables useful continuity in remarks like:
    • “It’s been 3 days — did the clone finish?”
    • “You were going to follow up with your doctor — how did it go?”
    • “It’s been a week since I last reminded you about your meds — should I remind you again?”

:bullseye: Why It Matters:

  • Helps people — especially older adults — manage medications, recovery timelines, or schedules
  • Improves follow-up for life tasks and long-term projects
  • Adds natural, helpful context to AI conversations over time

:locked_with_key: Privacy & Control:

  • 100% opt-in
  • No access to your system clock, location, or calendar
  • Just a lightweight internal counter (e.g., “Last session was 4 days ago”)

:brain: Why Now?

As memory features evolve, temporal awareness is the next logical step in making AI more helpful, responsive, and human-like — without compromising user privacy.

I also miss this function. The temporal context would make longer conversations easier. But your examples would require even more than just the current time, namely also the proactive demand for desired topics. This would bring us a big step closer to the AI Comanion.

“Exactly! Temporal awareness is just the first step. Paired with memory and user preferences, it opens the door to genuine AI companionship — not just chat history. Thanks for chiming in!”
