Problem
ChatGPT users may spend months or years building a personalized working relationship with the assistant. They share their names, educational backgrounds, goals, preferences, ongoing projects, and custom shortcuts.
However, users can experience inconsistent recall of these details across conversations. Important instructions may not be retrieved when needed, and users may have to repeat information they have already provided. Long-running conversations can also contain valuable context that users cannot easily preserve as structured, reusable instructions.
This creates frustration and reduces trust in ChatGPT as a long-term assistant.
Proposed Solution: Permanent Memory Vault
I propose a dedicated, user-controlled memory section in ChatGPT where users can explicitly save important information and instructions.
Users should be able to organize memories into categories such as:
- Personal profile and background
- Learning and response preferences
- Custom shortcuts and commands
- Long-term goals and plans
- Ongoing projects and important decisions
For example, a user could save the instruction: “Whenever I type T, provide the latest technology news relevant to my computer science studies and career goals.”
Expected Features
1. Explicit memory saving: Users can manually add, edit, pin, and organize information rather than depending entirely on automatic memory selection.
2. Persistent availability: Saved memories should remain available across new conversations and should not disappear merely because the user deletes old chat history.
3. Reliable retrieval: ChatGPT should automatically consult relevant saved memories when responding, including user-defined commands and preferences.
4. Memory verification: Users should be able to see which saved instructions are active and test whether a shortcut or preference is working correctly.
5. Complete user control: Users should be able to review, edit, export, and individually delete saved memories, with clear privacy settings.
6. Separation from conversation history: Deleting a conversation should not delete explicitly saved memories unless the user chooses that action.
Why This Matters
ChatGPT is increasingly used as a learning partner, coding assistant, research companion, and long-term productivity tool. Reliable continuity would reduce repeated explanations, preserve valuable context, and make personalization more predictable.
The goal is not to store every conversation forever. It is to give users a dependable, transparent, and user-controlled place for the information they consider important.
I request that OpenAI consider developing this feature or improving the existing memory system to provide these capabilities.
