Feature Request: Hidden Chats, Archive, and Secure Conversation Management

Overview

I would like to propose a new conversation management system for ChatGPT that allows users to hide, archive, organize, and securely access conversations without cluttering the main chat list.

As ChatGPT becomes a daily workspace for developers, researchers, students, businesses, writers, and professionals, many users accumulate hundreds or even thousands of conversations. The current sidebar becomes difficult to manage, and there is no way to keep sensitive or important chats private while still retaining access to them.

This proposal introduces a secure and user-friendly way to organize conversations without affecting existing functionality.

Problem Statement

Currently:

  • Every saved conversation appears in the sidebar.
  • Users cannot hide conversations.
  • Users cannot archive conversations.
  • Users cannot organize chats into folders.
  • Users cannot lock sensitive conversations.
  • Users cannot keep confidential projects separate from everyday chats.

This creates several issues:

  • Difficult navigation for users with large chat histories.
  • Reduced privacy when sharing screens or working in public.
  • Sensitive work is always visible in the sidebar.
  • Important projects become buried beneath newer conversations.
  • No way to separate work, personal, research, and experimental chats.

Proposed Features

1. Hidden Chats

Allow users to hide any conversation from the sidebar.

Behavior

  • Right-click β†’ Hide Chat
  • Hidden chats immediately disappear from the main sidebar.
  • Chat remains fully functional.
  • Conversation ID remains unchanged.
  • Memory, uploads, files, and context remain intact.

Access Methods

Users can access hidden chats by:

  • Direct conversation link
  • Dedicated β€œHidden Chats” page
  • Optional search results
  • Favorites (if enabled)

2. Hidden Chats Vault

Create a dedicated secure area.

Example:

Sidebar

New Chat

Recent Chats

Projects

Archived

Hidden Chats πŸ”’

Opening Hidden Chats requires one of:

  • Account password
  • Device authentication
  • Passcode
  • Biometrics
  • Two-factor authentication (optional)

3. Archive Chats

Separate from Hidden Chats.

Archived chats:

  • Removed from Recent Chats
  • Still searchable
  • Easier organization
  • Similar to email archives

Perfect for completed projects.

4. Chat Lock

Allow users to lock individual conversations.

Example:

Project Alpha πŸ”’

Authentication Required

Useful for:

  • Client work
  • Financial discussions
  • Legal documents
  • Medical information
  • Security research

5. Chat Folders

Allow custom folders.

Example:

πŸ“ Work
    Client A
    Client B

πŸ“ University
    AI
    Networking

πŸ“ Research

πŸ“ Security

πŸ“ Personal

Folders could support:

  • Drag and drop
  • Rename
  • Nesting
  • Color labels
  • Icons

6. Favorites

Allow starring conversations.

Pinned at top.

Example:

:star: Company Documentation

:star: Research Notes

:star: API Reference

7. Smart Tags

Users could assign tags.

Examples:

python

#Django

research

#Personal

cybersecurity

#Invoices

Searching a tag instantly filters conversations.

8. Advanced Search

Current search is limited.

Suggested improvements:

Search by:

  • Title
  • Content
  • Uploaded files
  • Date
  • GPT model
  • Folder
  • Tags
  • Hidden chats
  • Archived chats
  • Shared chats

9. Privacy Mode

Hide conversation titles automatically.

Instead of:

Bank Account Analysis

Display:

Private Conversation

until authenticated.

Ideal for screen sharing.

10. Temporary Hide

Allow users to hide conversations until:

  • Tomorrow
  • Next week
  • Custom date

Automatically restore later.

11. Workspace Support

Businesses could have:

Engineering

Marketing

Legal

HR

Finance

Each with separate folders and permissions.

12. Conversation Vault

A secure vault similar to password managers.

Features:

  • Encryption
  • Lock
  • Biometric unlock
  • Export restrictions (optional)
  • Secure backups

13. Sidebar Filters

Examples:

All

Recent

Favorites

Archived

Hidden

Shared

Pinned

Today

This Month

Projects

14. Bulk Management

Allow selecting multiple conversations.

Actions:

  • Hide
  • Archive
  • Delete
  • Move
  • Export
  • Share
  • Tag
  • Lock

15. Keyboard Shortcuts

Examples:

Ctrl + H β†’ Hide

Ctrl + Shift + H β†’ Hidden Chats

Ctrl + L β†’ Lock Chat

Ctrl + F β†’ Search

Ctrl + Shift + A β†’ Archive

16. Link-Only Access

This is one of the most valuable features.

When a chat is hidden:

  • It disappears completely from the sidebar.
  • It remains accessible only by:
    • Direct URL
    • Hidden Chats section
    • Authorized search (optional)

This provides a clean workspace while preserving access to long-term or confidential conversations.

Example Workflow

Developer working on confidential client software:

  1. Create conversation.
  2. Finish discussion.
  3. Click β€œHide Chat.”
  4. Chat disappears from sidebar.
  5. Bookmark the conversation URL.
  6. Open instantly whenever needed.
  7. Nobody viewing the sidebar can see it.

Security Considerations

To prevent accidental exposure:

  • Require authentication before revealing hidden chats.
  • Optional biometric unlock.
  • Optional PIN.
  • Optional inactivity timeout.
  • Device-specific trust settings.
  • Audit log for enterprise users.

Benefits

For Individuals:

  • Cleaner workspace
  • Better privacy
  • Easier organization
  • Less scrolling
  • Faster retrieval

For Businesses:

  • Better client confidentiality
  • Improved project organization
  • Reduced accidental exposure
  • Easier collaboration

For Researchers:

  • Organize papers
  • Separate projects
  • Archive completed work

For Developers:

  • Keep production projects hidden
  • Separate client work
  • Organize debugging sessions

For Students:

  • Organize by course
  • Archive completed semesters
  • Separate assignments

User Experience Impact

This feature would significantly improve ChatGPT for users with extensive conversation histories. Rather than functioning only as a chat interface, ChatGPT would become a more capable knowledge workspace where users can organize, secure, and quickly retrieve important information.

Conclusion

Adding Hidden Chats, Archived Chats, Secure Chat Locking, Folders, Tags, Favorites, and Link-Only Access would greatly enhance privacy, organization, and usability without disrupting existing workflows. These features would benefit individual users, enterprises, researchers, students, and developers alike while making ChatGPT a more scalable tool for long-term knowledge management.

Welcome to the dev Community, @schnehowebking

Thanks for taking the time to put this together. You've clearly put a lot of thought into both the organization and privacy aspects of conversation management.

Features like hidden or archived chats, folders, tags, favorites, improved search, and options to better protect sensitive conversations are all ideas that could make ChatGPT much easier to manage for people with large chat histories or confidential work.

While I can't comment on whether any of these features are planned or on potential timelines, I can definitely see the value in the overall request. I've made sure your feedback is noted so it can be considered by the team.
