ChatGPT needs a clearer and more efficient way to manage conversation history.
At the moment, deleting or archiving chats individually through the three-dot menu is too cumbersome, especially for users with many conversations.
Requested improvements:
- Allow users to select multiple chats and delete, archive, or move them into projects in one action.
- Add filters and sorting options based on age, last use, topic, project, chat length, or whether files are attached.
- Offer clear choices when leaving a conversation, such as “Continue later,” “Save to project,” “Archive,” or “Delete.”
- Make Temporary Chat much more visible. The current icon is too hidden and not self-explanatory. A clearly labelled choice between “Regular Chat” and “Temporary Chat” should be available when starting a new conversation.
- Suggest Temporary Chat for short, one-time questions.
- Allow users to extract and save only important information from a conversation, such as summaries, decisions, tasks, dates, contacts, final text versions, or project-relevant facts.
- Let users save these extracted items to a project or a dedicated saved-items list.
- After the relevant information has been saved, allow the remaining conversation to be shortened, archived, or deleted.
- Add an overview showing which chats contain files, which information has already been saved to projects, and which old chats may no longer be needed.
- Offer optional reminders to review or delete chats that have not been opened for a long time.
The goal is to help users keep important information while reducing unnecessary chat clutter and making personal data management much easier.
