Feature Request: Biometric App Lock and Trusted-Device Proximity Unlocking

Hi everyone!

I’d like to suggest a security and privacy feature for ChatGPT that I think would be particularly useful for people who use the app across multiple devices or in shared environments.

1. Native biometric authentication

It would be great to have an optional app lock that uses each platform’s native authentication system:

  • iPhone and iPad: Face ID or Touch ID.

  • Mac: Touch ID on supported devices.

  • Windows PCs: Windows Hello facial recognition or fingerprint authentication, where available.

This would allow users to protect their ChatGPT conversations without having to rely solely on their device’s screen lock or repeatedly sign out of their account.

2. Unlocking through a trusted nearby device

Another interesting possibility would be to use a trusted smartphone to authorize access to ChatGPT on another device.

For example, when my iPhone is nearby, it could authorize access to ChatGPT on my Mac or Windows PC. If the phone moves away, the app could automatically lock after a configurable delay.

Ideally, users could choose whether proximity alone is sufficient to unlock the app or whether it should simply act as an additional authorization step.

This feature should rely on secure device pairing and cryptographic verification rather than Bluetooth signal strength alone.

3. Automatic and manual locking

The app could also offer a few simple options:

  • Automatically lock after a configurable period of inactivity.

  • Allow users to lock ChatGPT immediately with a dedicated button or menu option.

  • Require authentication when reopening the app or returning to a protected session.

  • Optionally hide conversation contents while the app is locked.

4. Privacy and security considerations

The implementation should use existing operating-system authentication APIs, such as Apple’s LocalAuthentication framework and Windows Hello, without requiring OpenAI to collect or store users’ biometric data.

The feature should be optional and configurable independently on each device, allowing users to choose the authentication method that best suits their setup.

Why I think this would be useful

ChatGPT conversations can contain personal information, private discussions, documents, and other sensitive content. An additional app-level lock would be especially useful in university environments, workplaces, shared households, or whenever someone briefly uses a device that is already unlocked.

I think combining native biometric authentication with optional proximity-based unlocking would provide a good balance between security, privacy, and convenience, while fitting naturally into the Apple and Windows ecosystems.

Would anyone else find this useful? I’d be interested to hear whether other users would prefer a simple biometric lock, proximity-based unlocking, or both.

Thanks for considering this suggestion!
