As a long-term user, I often work on large projects with ChatGPT where our conversations stretch to several metres long. But in many cases, only a small portion (say, 10–20%) is useful for later reference. The rest — including polite phrases, detours, or mistakes — just bloats the thread.
I suggest adding a simple Delete Message function (user-side only), allowing me to remove either my own messages or AI replies from within a session. This would:
– Make long chats easier to navigate
– Let users curate conversations for re-use or export
– Potentially reduce OpenAI’s storage overhead by terabytes a day
– Help reduce unnecessary polite filler that adds no long-term value
Important: No editing, just deletion — keeps it safe and simple, and avoids abuse.
Thanks for considering it. This would be a huge productivity boost, and likely an infrastructure benefit as well.

I’d like this feature as well. Other AI such as Venice AI already has this feature which allow user to delete only particular messages in a conversation (not the whole conversation/chat). Thanks
