Deleting a specific message would be useful. In case someone accidentally sent an unfinished message, they don’t have to delete the whole chatroom and resend the messages. When you got great responses, it’s really a shame to delete it all just because of one accidental message.
Would love to see the ability to delete specific messages within each chat. If a message is particular unuseful, the vertical space it takes up is inefficient, not to mention its negative effects on the chat information/memory as a whole. There are buttons for copy, liking, etc… why not a trash can to delete?
I agree. Also, as I understand things, the prompt in chatgpt is formed like in the assistants API by prepending the entire conversation to the user’s most recent input. In case the chat has become unproductive, it would be nice to be able to pick up the conversation at an earlier point and take it in a different direction. One way to do this would be to delete the input/response pairs after that point.
Yes, in my case I wanted to share one of the answer chatgpt gave with my friends. But I couldn’t due to some of the personal previous answers that I don’t want to share.
That’s an excellent suggestion! Allowing users to delete or edit specific messages in a chat could significantly enhance the user experience. It would:
- Fix Mistakes Easily: Users could correct typos, accidental messages, or incomplete thoughts without affecting the rest of the conversation.
- Preserve Valuable Content: Valuable responses would remain intact, saving time and effort spent in creating them.
- Streamline Chats: Users wouldn’t need to restart entire conversations, ensuring continuity and better organization.
This feature could be implemented with:
- A delete icon next to each user message, enabling deletion.
- An edit option to refine messages while maintaining context.
- Version history (optional), allowing users to revert to the original if needed.
I also want to be able to delete or at least hide unwanted responses I’m frustrated with. Sure I could just regenerate new ones however the old ones always shows up first when shifting between the previous older responses on the conversation tree.
100% agree with this suggestion.
exactly, that’s what I wish I could do
Another vote for this suggestion; would be very helpful indeed.
I agree this is a missing feature. It would reduce the amount of data that need to go back and forth each time.
Yes, this should have been a feature a long time ago.
+1
- when you switch versions you are by default pointing to the 1st version.
- unwanted chat stays and eats up the total size of the chat.
- some easier to navigate version control will be nice.
As a neurodivergent person and mental health clinician who champions the use of AI in ethical ways that support functioning, it is incredibly frustrating not to be able to delete messages in the chat.
Sometimes I am not finished with my message and hit the wrong button. Sometimes, ChatGPT responds too quickly while I am using voice, and I haven’t finished my thought/prompt. And sometimes, ChatGPT does not answer my question—perhaps because it is unable to do so, and I’ve tried rephrasing it several times without success.
All of these challenges result in a chat with quite a few extra responses from ChatGPT and me that clutter the threaded discussion and are very distracting as I review the information at the end or reference it again in the future.
I humbly urge you to prioritize this feature soon. If it affects me, I am sure it is affecting many others as well. Reducing mental distress is critical for people like us, and I believe that might be part of your mission, too.
Thank you for your time and consideration! –K

Does someone from Open AI looks into these comments? Is there any ETA on this feature or any decision if this will be implemented or not?
While doing a long chat with Chat GPT, I often ask several unrelated questions in between. While sharing it at the end or saving it myself for later, I would like to delete those unnecessary questions asked and answered and only keep the relevant ones.
