Feature suggestion: delete individual messages within a chat thread

Hi there,
I’m a long-time user who frequently creates complex, evolving stories with multiple characters and deep lore. As such, my conversations with ChatGPT often get quite long, full of brainstorming, character work, drafts, and side comments.

I’d love to request a small but incredibly useful feature:

The ability to delete individual messages (both prompts and responses) within a chat thread.

Right now, if we want to “clean up” a long conversation, we either:

  • Lose the whole chat by starting fresh, or
  • Keep scrolling through outdated or redundant content.

Having a simple :multiply: button next to each message would let us:

  • Prune unnecessary fluff while keeping key exchanges.
  • Preserve chat threads that evolve into important reference material.
  • Keep chats functional for longer, especially when working on long-term projects.
  • Reduce mental clutter in deep creative or research-based work.

This would be especially helpful for creatives, writers, roleplayers, and researchers who use ChatGPT as a collaborative tool over time.

Cheers!

Seems like the most basic feature that chatgpt should have. Perplexity has it, I am sure there is a reason (not benefitting the user though) openAi has not implemented this simple delete of messages in a chat. Seems highly suspicious to me for such a basic usability option to have.
