I’d like the ability to place bookmarks (or markers) on specific messages inside a conversation so I can quickly return to important points within long chats.
My chats often span thousands of lines across multiple topics, and scrolling to find a specific statement, idea, or strategy is inefficient. A message-level bookmarking tool would make ChatGPT dramatically easier to navigate.
How it could work (using existing UI elements):
1. Add a “Bookmark” option to the existing message dropdown.
Each message already has a dropdown with actions like Edit, Copy, and Delete.
Adding “Add Bookmark” there is a natural, minimal addition that fits the current layout.
2. Add a “Bookmarks” list to the chat-level dropdown at the top.
Each chat has a dropdown menu next to the GPT name.
This could include a “Bookmarks” section that displays all saved markers for that specific chat, letting users jump directly to any bookmarked message.
Why this matters:
-
Long multi-topic conversations are becoming normal for legal work, business planning, research, writing, and ongoing projects.
-
Bookmarks reduce friction and save time by letting users instantly return to key points.
-
This feature expands on the UI ChatGPT already has, rather than introducing a new system—making it low-complexity and high-value.
-
It improves organization and usability across the entire platform.
This would be a small interface enhancement with a major workflow impact.
