Feature Request: Bookmarks / Pinning for Long ChatGPT Conversations

One usability issue I often encounter with longer ChatGPT conversations is navigation.

When a conversation becomes long (for example during coding sessions, research, or strategy discussions), it becomes difficult to quickly return to important prompts or responses. At the moment, the only option is to scroll through many messages to find them again.

A useful improvement could be the ability to bookmark or pin specific messages within a conversation.

Possible approaches

Bookmarks

  • Add a small :star: bookmark icon next to each message.

  • Bookmarked messages appear in a small panel or list.

  • Clicking a bookmark jumps directly to that message in the conversation.

Pinning (especially useful on mobile)

  • Similar to Telegram: users can pin important messages.

  • Users can quickly jump between pinned messages.

  • The active pin updates as you navigate through them.

Example use cases

  • long coding / debugging sessions

  • research workflows

  • prompt engineering

  • business planning or brainstorming

As conversations increasingly become long knowledge exchanges, having lightweight navigation tools like bookmarks or pins could make working with longer threads much easier.

Hey @reza_mir_sadeghi, this is a really solid suggestion.

Once conversations get long, especially during coding or research sessions, scrolling back to find earlier prompts or responses can definitely become frustrating. Right now ChatGPT does not support bookmarking or pinning specific messages inside a conversation, so navigation mostly relies on scrolling or using search.

The idea of pinned messages or a bookmark panel makes a lot of sense for longer technical workflows. A few folks in the community have raised similar navigation challenges as conversations get more complex.

I’ll make sure this gets captured as product feedback. Improvements around managing longer conversations are definitely an area we continue to evaluate.

Another way of finding specific parts of long chats could be to allow users to signal a ‘sticky note’ or a ‘paper tab’. It could be a colored highlight of one line of text that I could scroll through and find quickly. Different colors would be helpful.

Hey @OpenAI_Support , I noticed today that the chat interface has a jump-to message feature for navigating previous prompts in a conversation.

I was wondering — has this feature always been there, or is it something that was recently introduced?

Agreed. I can bookmark this post but not important portions of my chat conversation That I have to reference over and over. I love that we have projects But some of these converstaions and things to do get really long. It would be nice to have the option to bookmark and area to jump back to OR even be able to form a sort of table of contents. I have the tendency to flush out an idea first leading to long combursome threads but then the sections I need are hard to get back to as I work through the idea or issue… And it only gets worse as I begin the creation process and need to make how to or even please complete X requests.
