I would like to request a new feature for ChatGPT that would greatly benefit professionals in the construction and engineering fields. It would be incredibly useful if ChatGPT could accurately read and interpret job blueprints to measure and count various elements as requested by the user.

For example, being able to:

  • Read job plans and accurately count the number of rooms and toilets needed.
  • Determine the size and total length of pipes required.
  • Measure areas and dimensions of specific sections.

This feature would streamline project planning and estimation, saving significant time and reducing the risk of human error. It would be a valuable tool for anyone working with construction plans, making ChatGPT an even more indispensable resource.

For instance, I’ve used it to help create matrix sheets. However, I’ve noticed it cannot directly interpret plans. If you highlight or circle specific items, it becomes more effective. For example, if you want to create a list of all the rooms, ChatGPT can assist if you visually mark them.

I also found that using different colors for specific data—like marking all measurements in red—helps it interpret the information more accurately. However, it still struggles to understand the boundaries of a room. If you ask it to define a room’s area and calculate its square footage, it often lacks the context to do so accurately.

To work around this, you’d need to manually highlight each space and provide the measurements for ChatGPT to align them with the appropriate area. At that point, using dedicated software like Bluebeam is usually a more efficient solution for these tasks.
