Error 429 Continuously Happening

Any fix for this issue? Details below.

Issue Summary:**

  • I am continuously receiving error 429 (“You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details.”) on the API.
  • I have a new project and generated a new API key, but the error continues.
  • I switched to gpt-5-mini (should have a 2.5M daily token cap in Tier 1), but still get the 429 error.
  • My total spend this month is only ~$5 from a $120 budget.
  • Daily token usage today is far below model group limits (only ~33k tokens today, but block triggers).
  • I am the only user in my organization/project (no shared usage).
  • No indication of policy or abuse violation shown in my account.
  • I am not exceeding file storage, monthly, or requests per minute rate limits.

Actions Taken:

  • Switched to “mini” and “nano” models.
  • Created a new project and API key.
  • Confirmed low usage on Limits and Billing pages.
  • Waited for reset, no change.

Have you prepaid to purchase credits to fund your usage of the API? Have you used them all up?

Your monthly limit is unlikely to be the source. Instead “check your billing details”.

for some reason it says i am currently in -$0.29 at the moment which is odd.

Regardless, is this different from the $120 credits i was given?

does this mean that in my current tier i can only prepay till $120? Or is each user given 120 free credit to use? Assuming its the second one i shouldn’t have to pay for anythign myself until that 120 is over right?

This says that you have set a budget at $120/month ie max amount you are happy to spend up to in a month and you have spent $5.28 of that budget.

You can set any monthly budget you want… You have to add money to spend it though.

(You are mistaken that you have been given $120 of ‘credit’ for free)

You can view your ‘Credit Balance’ (-$0.29) here: https://platform.openai.com/settings/organization/billing/overview

You are receiving 429 Error because you have a negative balance and need to add more funds.
