Duplicate ChatGPT Pro subscriptions after upgrading on Android

On my Android phone I subscribed to the ChatGPT “5x Pro” plan through Google Play and paid $100. Later, from inside the ChatGPT app, I chose to upgrade my current plan to “20x Pro”. Instead of upgrading my existing subscription, the app created a second, separate subscription. So in the same month, on the same account, I now have two active ChatGPT Pro subscriptions and was charged twice ($100 + $200 = $300) instead of a single upgrade.

I’d really appreciate the community’s help with two things:

  1. How can I get a refund for the duplicate charge? (It was purchased through Google Play in-app billing.)
  2. Why did the “upgrade” action create a duplicate subscription instead of upgrading the existing one? Is this a known issue with the in-app upgrade flow — on Google Play’s side or ChatGPT/OpenAI’s side? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the details, @0xZOne. I can see why that's confusing if you were expecting an upgrade but ended up with two active subscriptions.

Please create a support ticket by emailing support@openai.com with your account email and Google Play order numbers. Once you have a case ID, reply here with it and we can check further.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your guidance. I emailed support@openai.com as requested and received a case number.

Case Number: 11009469

Additional update: I also requested a refund from Google Play for the duplicate 5x Pro charge, but Google Play declined the refund and suggested contacting the developer directly.

I’ll continue following up with Support by email with the requested subscription details, but please help check further from your side when possible.

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

Quick update for Case Number 11009469:

I have received a Google Play cancellation/refund receipt for the duplicate 5x Pro subscription. The receipt says the paid amount will be refunded, though the refund has not reached my payment account yet.

Thank you for your help.
