Delete a selected range of messages

Dear OpenAI Team,

Thank you for building ChatGPT. I would like to suggest a feature that I believe would greatly improve the user experience, especially for researchers, developers, writers, and professionals who maintain long conversations.

Current limitation

At present, users can only delete an entire conversation.

However, there is no way to delete a single message or a small section within a conversation.

As conversations become very long, this causes several problems:

  • Early incorrect analyses remain permanently in the conversation.
  • Draft versions cannot be removed after a better version is produced.
  • Long conversations become difficult t o read.
  • Users must keep scrolling through obsolete content.
  • Important information becomes buried under outdated replies.

Suggest ed feature

Allow users to delete individual messages without deleting the entire conversation.

F or example :

User

Assistant

:wastebasket: Delete this reply

Conversation continues normally

or

Delete this branch only

while preserving the rest of the conversation.

Even better improvements

It would be extremely useful if conversations supported:

Delete individual messages

  • Delete a selected range of messages
  • Collapse / Expand sections
  • Archive obsolete messages
  • Pin important messages
  • Mark messages as “Superseded” or “Outdated”

These features would make long research conversations much easier to manage.

Why this matters

Many users (such as researchers, physicians, programmers, lawyers, and writers) may keep a single conversation active for months o r even years.

During that time:

  • m any intermediate analyses become obsolete,
  • better versions replace older one s,
  • but old responses cannot be removed.

Allowing users to clean up conversations would greatly improve readability and productivity without requiring them to create new chats.

Many professional users use ChatGPT as a long-term knowledge workspace rather than a simple chatbot. For example, I use ChatGPT to manage hundreds of medical cases over long periods. Often an early analysis becomes obsolete after new clinical information is added. Being able to delete only those obsolete messages would keep the conversation clean while pre serving the valuable later discussion .

Th ank you for considering this suggestion.

Hey @_101, welcome to the community!

This could make long-running conversations much easier to manage. Being able to remove an outdated reply, clean up a selected section, or mark older information as superseded would help users keep the useful parts of a conversation without deleting the entire chat.

The additional ideas around collapsing sections and pinning important messages could also make lengthy conversations easier to navigate.

I can’t promise or share a timeline for changes like this, but I’ll pass your feedback along internally.
