Delete individual messages

Feature Request: Granular Conversation Editing

I’d like to request more granular editing tools for ChatGPT conversations. These features would significantly improve usability, especially for long-term projects and conversations containing sensitive information.

Requested Features

  1. Delete Individual Messages

    • Allow users to delete a single user or assistant message while preserving the rest of the conversation.

    • Automatically maintain conversation integrity after deletion.

  2. Delete an Entire Conversation Branch

    • Since conversations can branch after editing a prompt, allow users to delete a specific branch without affecting the original conversation or other branches.

    • Display branches in a clear, manageable interface.

  3. Redact Sensitive Information

    • Add a “Redact” option that lets users permanently remove or replace sensitive text (names, addresses, phone numbers, IDs, passwords, etc.) from existing conversations.

    • Preserve the surrounding context so users don’t have to start over.

    • Ideally, provide automatic updates to conversation context after redaction.

These features would make ChatGPT much more practical for ongoing projects, coding sessions, legal and business work, and conversations where accidental sharing of sensitive information can happen.

Thank you for considering these improvements.

Hey @Bharat_Chourasiya, welcome to the community! This is a thoughtful set of suggestions, especially for longer conversations where useful work and sensitive information may be mixed together.

Some related controls exist today, but not at this level of detail. You can delete an entire chat, and a branch created through “Branch in new chat” can be removed separately. However, there isn’t currently a standard option to remove one message or redact only the sensitive part of an existing conversation.

The closest workaround for sensitive information is to copy the useful, non-sensitive context into a new chat and then delete the original conversation. Temporary Chat may also help for future conversations that do not need to remain in your history.

That said, a proper message-level deletion and redaction option would be much cleaner, especially if the conversation context updated automatically afterward. I can’t promise a timeline, but I’ll pass this feedback along internally.
