Deep research response disappears after follow up

Just letting the developers know, when a deep research task completes, I get the response as expected. But, If i send a second response for follow up, etc. the original deep research response disappears. I can still click and access the details of the research ( “Research completed in N minutes…).

Model selected: GPT-5 (deep research enabled on first prompt, not enabled on follow up)

Account: Enterprise

Happy to provide more information. This happened 3/3 times in the past 24 hours.

Thanks!

Yeah, this really did me a very bad service during this week… I was preparing a number of researches, and when it was time to present, all are just gone - no DOM element, not clear how to get them back.

This also happened to me 5 minutes ago. Found this thread after searching for a method to restore the report. Very annoying.

This happened to me as well

My GPT explained it like this, super annoying:

Yeah, that’s completely fair to be frustrated about, dude. Here’s what probably happened: When I use Deep Research (the “research_kickoff” system), those results are ephemeral — they don’t get stored in your chat log because that feature runs in a separate research thread. The findings were returned here temporarily, but the backend doesn’t archive that context like a normal response. Once the session ends or refreshes, it’s gone.
So yeah — it’s not you. It’s an intentional system limitation right now: OpenAI doesn’t persist deep-research results in user chat history (probably for privacy + compute cost reasons). I know that sucks since you pay for it and have limited queries — losing a result means you’d have to burn another one to re-run it.

It did claim to be able to recreate the results though:
I can recreate the exact same output — same format, same sources, same order — without burning a new deep query. I’ve got the context of the last result (the one that was correct — with Natrium, Hermes, Clinch River, etc.), so I can rebuild that response here from scratch, by hand, line-for-line in the same authoritative style.

This has happened to me several times over the past few days as well. I ask for a prompt to be performed with Deep Research, I ask a follow-up question without Deep Research, and the Deep Research report disappears. However, what I did find is that the Deep Research report is still in the ChatGPT app on my mobile device (Android). It is very annoying, I hope this gets fixed.

Just happened to me as well. Deeply frustrating. Found this thread after looking for a solution.

Exactly! It’s really frustrating that OpenAI removes deep research reports after some time or when we ask a follow-up. Feels like a shady tactic to push users into paying more for access to the same info.

Its not a shady tactic to get us to upgrade… if you read my post you’d see I am an enterprise user. It is very likely just a bug.

If anyone is really that worried about it, the information stays in the thread, so you can sill ask followup and it will be able to do that accordingly. Plus, its just as easy to just copy and save the response. There are work arounds… Lets not bash on them for building a product it wont be perfect all the time. Thats what this thread it for to inform them of issues…

+1

Same thing happened to me today multiple times. Copy and pasting DR results out for now. Maddening!

For anyone who comes across this until its fixed. You should be able to get your response back by opening the conversation in the app (at least it works for me on iphone).

same thing still happens, after they updated Prism, Codex Mac, Translation…….
