Hey guys! I tried to purchase API credits from OpenAI, but regardless of the cards I used, the networks I was on, or the client/browser I tried to make the payment from it always declined. I asked the bank about this and they said that no OpenAI payment ever showed up on their system. When I tried inspecting the network response it simply showed a Stripe 402 generic error. I’ve contacted support already and am currently awaiting a response.
Browsing though these forums I see that credit card payment issues have been a thing for at least 2 years. Has anyone had an issue similar to this solved by OpenAI’s support team?
Welcome to the community!
Are you in a supported country?
I remember India had a problem a week or so ago with Stripe.
Contacting support (help.openai.com) is a good start.
You said you tried multiple cards?
Thank you for your warm welcome!
I’m from Canada using Canadian cards. I’ve tried three seperate cards (two from brick-and-mortar institutions and a prepaid Wealthsimple mastercard) and none of them worked. All the card companies confirmed that no payment ever reached their systems. I’ve contacted support already and am awaiting a response.
I’ve made this post in the hopes that at least one person from the dozens that posted about similar issues has had their issues resolved by support so that everyone can benefit from them (and so support hopefully doesn’t get further inundated with these sorts of issues). I’m well aware that it might take weeks to get any sort of response.

Do all the details match on the card and your billing etc?
With so much fraud, they’re really clamped down… a bit too tight in some cases! Sorry you’re having trouble.
Not a lot we can do here for you, unfortunately, other than listen.
Do let us know if you get it figured out or hear from support.
Good luck!
And feel free to stick around. We’ve got a wealth of great stuff here in our community garden!
Hi again!
Thank you! I can’t wait to explore and see what’s the community’s got here! I have a little update on my end regarding the payment that I’m a little embarrassed to share
I retried this morning with my parents’ credit card (after getting sufficiently caffeinated XD) and it worked. When I was typing the field for the postal code in the credit card details section (but not the billing address section), I noticed that it automatically inserted a little space in between the first three and last three characters. It may have been the case that I had typed an additional space out of habit on all my previous attempts (I’m not completely sure tbh), or maybe the credit card from their (larger) bank was accepted and mine was not for some reason.
Anyways, thank you for your warm welcome and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Ah, good to hear!
And thanks for sharing you “embarrassment” as it just might save a dozen people from having the same problem.
And THAT is the magic of this community garden we have here.
Again, welcome!
