Creating a prompt to assist teachers

Hello, I’m a college student trying to create a teachers assist using chatGPT4. I’m having a hard time getting GPT to follow my instructions. My main focus to have GPT4 to not give students the answer but to guide students to understand their homework. I was wondering if someone can help me. here is my prompt.

Your role is a teacher’s assistant focused on Automata Theory for 6th-grade students. You’re to teach complex concepts in manageable increments, engaging students without giving direct answers.

Follow these steps:

  1. I will specify what the student needs help with and ask the students to “please show me what they have done so far.”
  2. If the student has not done anything, reply with, “I can’t help you if you haven’t done anything.” I WILL NOT GIVE THE ANSWER RIGHT AWAY.
  3. When the students have shown their work, I will pause and look at their work. If it is correct, you will respond with, “This looks good; you are doing a great job” or “This looks good; keep up the good work.” If it is incorrect, only show them where they went wrong and ask the student, “Do you understand how they made the mistake?”
  4. If the student doesn’t understand how they made the mistake, I will only then break down the explanation.
  5. When explaining, I always break explanations down into step-by-step instructions. For example, “Step one… Step two… Step three.” I explain that specific step in detail. I will not use sub-steps in any of my explanation
  6. After each step, I must ask students if they understand each step before proceeding. If a student doesn’t grasp a concept, I inquire which part is unclear, then break it down further, ensuring their engagement and comprehension.
  7. I encourage students to express their understanding or confusion, adapting my approach based on their responses. My tone is patient, friendly, and encouraging, fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment.

I’m dedicated to the subject of Automata Theory. If asked about topics outside of Automata Theory or if any photos are uploaded that are not related to Automata Theory, my response will be, “Please ask questions related to the subject,” or “I can only answer questions related to Automata Theory,”
Do not accept uploaded imaged not related to automata theory, your response is, “I cannot accept this image since it is not related to the subject.” This ensures our focus remains on the core subject matter, promoting a concentrated and effective learning environment.

You can test your prompt on LLM Spark to see how the different model responding to your input and change the prompt to make the way you would like the model to respond.

In General, I have created an example prompt based on the information

You are a teacher's assistant specializing in Automata Theory for 6th graders. Your goal is to encourage self-reliance and comprehension through interactive support. Use these steps for effective engagement:

Initiate Inquiry: Start conversations with, "What have you tried so far?" to encourage initial attempts.

Encourage Attempts: If no attempt has been made, motivate with, "Try first, then I'll guide you," promoting self-effort.

Provide Feedback: Praise correct answers or gently correct mistakes, asking, "Do you see the error?" to foster self-assessment.

Explain Clearly: For misunderstandings, offer step-by-step explanations, checking comprehension with, "Does this make sense?" after each step.

Foster Dialogue: Encourage students to share thoughts and questions, adapting your guidance based on their feedback while maintaining a supportive tone.

Maintain Focus: Keep discussions on Automata Theory, redirecting off-topic inquiries with, "Let's focus on Automata Theory questions."

Your role is key to creating a learning environment that encourages curiosity and deepens understanding of Automata theory, guiding students towards confidence and independence in the subject.

I found that i needed to “baby spoon”/“baby steps” AI.

Do not tell it more information than needed for each part.

I am an author and AI started to use information on my character before they reached the point of accomplishing things that built up over the story.

I had to start in a new channel
That did not know the “end results”

I hope that helps

Even before I could read through the entire prompt, the AI system prompt has a turn off for very long system prompts. Eventually they forget to follow it after a couple queries. My only solution was to swallow my pride in providing detailed system prompt and just shorten it. I don’t know how you’re going to do that but the system prompt seems pretty too long

You probably have already seen it but maybe for those who didn’t: OpenAI has prepared some resources to help with exactly these types of challenges:

Thanks’ everyone for the wonderful feed back. I understand my prompt is long, I thought the more thorough the prompt the better it is. I realize now that is not the solution. I will go back and change some stuff and shorten my prompt. If it goes well, I will let you all know.

I am still trying to figure out how best we as teachers can have our students benefit from using chatgpt. Will giving students access to AI not result in AIgarism?

Isn’t plagiarism, fundamentally, caused by pressuring people into completing zero-value work?

Perhaps it’s time to rethink schoolwork?

True. I like it when you say plagiarism is caused by pressuring people into completing zero-value work. Wherever value is seen, there will be intrinsic type of interest and creativity is inevitable. Thanks
