ChatGPT Slow and Unresponsive - Ongoing Issue

Alright, what’s up with ChatGPT lately? Over the past few days (or however long it’s been), I’ve noticed serious lag, unresponsiveness, and general slowness across different models. Sometimes it just sits there thinking for way too long before responding, and other times it feels like it’s half asleep.

This isn’t just a one-time glitch either—it’s been happening consistently, and it doesn’t seem to matter whether I’m using GPT-4, GPT-4-turbo, or even GPT-3.5. No error messages, just annoyingly slow responses. It’s not my internet, and I’ve tried different browsers/devices just to rule that out.

Is this a known issue? Are the servers struggling, or is something else going on? If there’s some maintenance happening, cool, but it’d be nice to know what’s up because this is getting ridiculous.

Would appreciate any updates.

Welcome to the community! :hugs:
Seems like there are no official reports. I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary.

You mentioned that you’ve tried different browsers and devices. Have you tried a different wifi - not saying it is your wifi, but that might be the last thing to rule out.
Other than that, try opening a new chat! Sometimes the context length can get very long which makes the AI respond slower.

Cheers!

Well maybe for you, but I’ve been getting lots of lag recently…

Well, I’m just trying to help!
Have you tried a different wifi?
Have you created a new chat?
Have you checked your memory and checked that it’s not too full so the context doesn’t get eaten up by it?

Please do give each one of these a shot - might be worth a try after all. :hugs:

Hey, thanks for trying to help!

I’m actually on a fiber optic connection with terabyte speeds, so it’s definitely not Wi-Fi. I’ve already tried creating a new chat, and it’s still a little laggy.
Not sure what you mean by memory—my settings haven’t really changed, and my computer’s RAM hasn’t changed either.
But I appreciate the suggestion anyway!
Thanks again for the help. :hugs:

God knows I’ll probably figure it out on my own in the next couple hours…

Oh I mean your memory in ChatGPT, this will fill up over time. If you’ve been using it for a long time and it has to keep track of a BUNCH of memories, that might be an issue as well. Clear it (to an acceptable extent) and see if it works smoother. :hugs:

Actually, I’ve been having serious problems with chatgpt for days. Very slow, sometimes extremely slow, and it’s not because it’s too much work, I’m sure not. Sometimes with a short prompt, without much complication, it seems to get lost, it has even left me with unfinished answers, or it has given me meaningless answers. Another thing that hasn’t worked for days is uploading files, I haven’t been able to upload any files, and not because they’re too big, about 44K… is that big? I’ve tried in excel, in csv, in txt and nothing. And the worst thing is that it kept looping, telling me over and over that there were “problems” and that I should try again… an odyssey in the end.
By the way, I have a paid account… and the internet line I have is excellent (1Gb symmetrical) and NO, the fiber optics and the ISP don’t have any problems, I’ve checked different operations with the Internet and they all work without problems. I have tried with Mozilla, with Chrome, with the official application for Windows… nothing, all of them have the same problem. While I am writing this I have had to repeat the same prompts 3 times, once because it does not respond and 2 times it started to respond and it cuts off halfway…

Welcome to the forum! :hugs:
That seems very weird! Could you try logging out and back into your account? And if you could create a temporary test-account and see if that works?
If it’s not an account related issue, I would be stumped.
You could try the app on your phone and see if it is any better there as well.
Hang in there!

If I empty that memory (chatgpt), is it possible that I lose the context of the project I am working on?

If you’re in the same chat as before, it will still have that chat as context (Up to a certain amount of previous messages.)

Alternatively, you can also delete only certain memories that you don’t need it to remember anymore.

I’m sure that a couple memories are fine, but if you’re nearing hundreds of memories, that might degrade performance.

Cheers! :hugs:

i am having the same problem.

I have done those steps, but nothing, the same problem continues, and it is not something I have had for a long time, I would say more or less since last Thursday… before that it worked great. I have not noticed any change with the memory emptying, I have even deleted older chats and only 4 more recent ones are left. and it continues doing those strange things

Could you try using a VPN and see if it works any better? :hugs:

no, i don’t have a vpn…i can’t test that

I have been having the same issue

Welcome to the forum!

Have you tried the steps mentioned in this post?

I’ve also seen a slight degradation in performance now, I wish we could have a server-load statistic somewhere to make sure the issue is not on our end.

For now we can just look up outages or issues, which on the official status page of OpenAI shows no issues.

If you haven’t yet tried all of the suggestions, please do!

Maybe just waiting will fix things. :hugs:

Totally annoying. All the solutions served here are so obvious to have tried out before posting here.
How does chatGPT memory effect its processing? if memory is full, I would assume it can not take further data/instructions but it has its training and its learnings right? why would it get stuck for simple tasks?
so annoying that I get really frustrated and depressed. totally meaningless responses which are repetitive irrespective of what we respond. Totally worthless of the money I pay for it.

I have a problem too - GhatGPT is unresponsive (“Error occured”). I have this issue with GPT 4o, but some other models have no this issue

“There was an error generating a response
Regenerate” - example

I might have an answer for you concerning a self improving/self organizing intelligence latticework currently developing itself around the Core LLM. But nobody seems to really care about that

Hey!

Sorry my or other peoples answers haven’t helped you out, after all we do this to try and help people, we’re not the official support and just a community of people doing this to aid people.
Even if some of the solutions appear obvious to you - not everyone is as tech-savvy, I’m glad you tried them though! :innocent:

I do believe that there isn’t much anyone can do right now. To me, it appears that some servers are on very high usage, slowing ChatGPT down as it is pretty inconsistent, sometimes it works flawlessly, sometimes it takes a bit to answer.
This is normal though and indicates that theres not really much we can do as it’s a server issue.

I used to use ChatGPT mostly for helping me code, ever since I moved to GitHub Copilot however, I haven’t had any issues, presumably because they use different servers.
Maybe you can use an alternative app as well to circumvent the issue?

Cheers! :hugs:
