It’s November 2024 and it’s still doing this. It’s unusable. I bought a new mac M4 pro with 24GB memory.
I also noticed ChatGPT using 600MB of memory.
Paying user here, this problem has been going on for a few months.
It is unusable. Considering to switch to Grok because of this.
I have the same problem now. The ChatGPT web page just becomes unresponsive after each input. I’m starting looking into some alternatives.
Also experiencing this on my Legion 7 laptop. i9-13900HX, 64gb RAM, RTX 4090. I can’t see how this is a hardware issue but seems like extremely bad script management on ChatGPT. It just started today really bad.
Same problem in browser and native app in Win 11. All time freeze. On many computers including the latest generations and 128GB RAM.

I’m getting freezing and crashes almost on every prompt. It is unusable. and this is now April 2025. Can something be done about this? And as others are saying, I’m looking into alternatives.

Update : Even 10 days later, the problem remains. I have to refresh the window/conversation so I could read the answer. When will this get fixed ?
Same. Plus member. My computer is a beast. Started this week. Unusable.
I also have this issue. Originally I afraid the chat is too long, when the model need to read the previous chat and freezed, however, I use Canvas to put my requirement to keep things consistent, it still not working, As a plus member, ChatGPT still keep freezing no matter in the chat or refer to a canvas…
this is currently still an issuea, long threads still freezing the entire browser
Facing same issue after upgraded from free to plus - it became too slow, keeps becoming non-responsive with - “Wait” | “Exit” option.
I can’t stand this constant freezing. Does not matter what computer, mobile device or browser. I am currently trying other AI options so I can stop paying for this garbage.

Same here, on the free version sometimes it got a bit slow, but rarely locked up completely. So I thought, what the hell, I’ll pay $20.00 to not have the time limit. EVERY SINGLE RESPONSE SINCE UPGRADING HAS HUNG UP FORCING ME TO RELOAD THE PAGE, AND THEN STTILL WAIT SOME MORE, IT IS SLOW, IT CRASHES EVERY FRACKING TIME. I asked ChatGPT what could cause this, it told me to download the Windows app, so I did, IT WAS EVEN WORSE. I have searched the forums, have tried all that I can find to fix this and to no avail, I was not able to find a solution. ChatGPT also told me it could be my system causing the issue, FREE VERSION WORKED FINE! This needs to be resolved!

I have a hard time typing on a new Windows11 machine with 64GB of RAM. But in same conversation on IOS and MAC, I have no problem. It seems clearly a WIndows issue. It happens both with ChatGPT APP and many browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Brave, etc). It is not an issue of browser. Likely it is a native issue of Windows.

I know Windows 11 has been suffering from performance issues after recent Windows updates, but I want to confirm that these issues with the browser freezing also occur on Windows 10. I’m also running with 64GB of RAM, and prior to Chat GPT-5 did not have any issues with freezing tabs.
After using ChatGTP-5 via the web (Firefox) today I have no longer had any freezing issues.
I’ll continue to monitor, but maybe it’s been fixed?

Spoke too soon. It’s happening again now, though I don’t have to close the tab, waiting for about 30 seconds makes the tab come back to life.
NOTE: This is using a single chat window most of the day so it might be the size of the conversation, which I have seen for a long time now.
