iPad Pro 2nd Gen, iOS 17.7.10, ChatGPT 1.2025.273, same issue, but I found that it works in Slide Over and in Split View mode, when the app`s window takes a smaller part of a screen

Wow, good catch. This works for me as well.

Wow — thank you so much for figuring that out @smartomsk! That is genuinely clever. :raising_hands:

I just tested it on my iPad Pro (2nd Gen, iPadOS 17.7.10), and while it was definitely very temperamental (kept freezing, sometimes didn’t let me type anything, and I had to keep trying over and over), I eventually got it to work in Slide Over mode. It’s glitchy, but it’s the first time I’ve seen the app actually open in days!

That workaround might be the only current way in at all for some of us still stuck on iPadOS 17, so seriously — thank you for sharing it. I’m adding this to my support email as well, since it might help the engineers pinpoint what’s going wrong in full-screen mode.

If anyone else tries it and it works (or doesn’t), would be great to hear how you get on.

Thanks again!!

:megaphone: UPDATE – Workaround + Voice Mode Data Loss Warning

Hi everyone — quick update!

:e_mail: OpenAI Support Update

Joseph from OpenAI Support reached out to me a few days ago with some follow-up questions — app version, device model, VPN settings, etc. I’ve now replied in detail and flagged how many people this issue is affecting. He seemed receptive, so I’m hoping it gets escalated internally soon.

:hammer_and_wrench: :white_check_mark: Temporary Workaround (Split View Trick)

Thanks to a genius workaround shared by another user here @smartomsk, I let Joseph know that the app does eventually work if you launch it in Split View or Slide Over mode.

:small_blue_diamond: In portrait orientation, with a narrow window

:small_blue_diamond: After several attempts (it may freeze a few times)

:small_blue_diamond: Eventually, you can type and use the app normally

It’s definitely not perfect, but it’ll keep me going while we wait for a proper fix.

:warning: :police_car_light: Voice Mode Caution – Major Data Loss Bug

Unfortunately, I also discovered something very troubling while testing Split Screen mode with the ChatGPT app:

:right_arrow: While using the app in Split View, I briefly switched to Voice Mode, and when I came back to Text Mode, most of my chat history vanished.

No warning, no recovery — just gone.

:brain: Key takeaway:

Do not toggle to Voice Mode mid-chat on the iPad app, while in Split View.

It doesn’t seem to affect the browser version (e.g. Safari), but I’d still be cautious there

Thanks to everyone’s replies we can see this is clearly not isolated — it’s a widespread compatibility bug post-update.

Thanks again to everyone who’s been replying and testing — you’ve all been brilliant. Let’s keep this thread alive until we get a proper fix. :folded_hands:t2:

Beware: I just tried this, to use the Split View and it froze my iPad. It would not turn off. I tried everything to fix this issue. I had to plug it into a power source and hold the off button for an insane amount of time and then it prompted me to restore my iPad. I briefly panicked, unplugged the power cord, hit the power button and it eventually showed the apple loading screen. This fix does not work. I’m about to upgrade my iPad to IOS 18 and call it a day.

My workaround is downgrading the app to v1.2025.260, and it works correctly again. I use ipatool to do that

ipatool download -b com.openai.chat --external-version-id 878344072

Where do I find ipatool please

I’m not allowed to post a link here. You can search for ipatool on google

I had the same issue. Had to remove beta and update to 18.7.1. This worked for my iPad Pro 12.9” 5th gen

So the split screen trick works. That makes me think it would be a fairly easy fix to push out.
