My ChatGPT app on iPad (iPadOS 17) suddenly stopped working. When I open it, I just see the ChatGPT logo or a blank white screen and nothing happens. It was working perfectly a few days ago.
I’ve tried:
– Restarting iPad
– Deleting and reinstalling app
The web version works fine and my iPhone app works fine — it’s just the iPad app that’s stuck.

You are much better of reporting issues to help.openai.com and using the icon in the bottom right or support@openai.com as this forum is not monitored by the ChatGPT or SORA teams.

Thank you everyone for all your replies — it’s honestly been such a relief knowing it wasn’t just my iPad suddenly being too old for the ChatGPT app!!.
I wanted to share what I’ve done so far:
I emailed support@openai.com directly (thank you to the user who suggested contacting support via both chat and email — I did both!).
The AI support agent who replied confirmed there are currently no widespread outages, but they believe this may be a new compatibility bug affecting some iPads running iPadOS 17 after the latest update.
They asked for additional details like iOS version and model, and whether the issue happens in both portrait and landscape (it does — still white), and whether I have any accessibility settings turned on (I don’t).
I’ve sent all of that information to them, so it’s now (hopefully) officially logged with the engineering team for review.
They also mentioned that regular app updates are released, so a fix for iPad-specific issues should arrive soon. (Hope so!)
For now, I’m using the iPhone app (works perfectly) and the Safari web version on iPad as a workaround. It’s not ideal tbh — definitely a bit slower and clunkier than the app.
Thank you again to everyone who chimed in here — your messages honestly stopped me from thinking my poor iPad was doomed!

I’m experiencing the same issue with my iPad Pro (2nd Gen - iOS 17.7.10). I also tried uninstalling it as well, thinking it was just a glitched, but now after re-installing it, the ChatGPT app icon is now popping up as “unknown” (like no picture of the ChatGPT icon) and when I press on it, it just stays on a blank screen. Hopefully this gets fixed soon. Thanks to the people who had reported it!
Thanks everyone for your replies, it’s reassuring to see it’s not just my iPad, but that loads of people on iPadOS 17 can’t access the ChatGPT app. Really appreciate everyone chiming in.
Today, now even Safari won’t load the ChatGPT website. Just a white screen. [update Sat 11th Oct — Safari working but slow]
Google Chrome works — barely! But switching between chats takes forever!! So slow.
I’ve sent another email to support explaining all this, and asked them again to escalate it to the engineers. This needs a proper fix!
Also read many Reddit posts talking about new guardrails being added to ChatGPT recently. I’ve also today noticed some strange responses from GPT-5 as well.
