Chat sidebar scrolling triggers rate limits

I have a ton of chats and i am trying to manage them, but by just scrolling down the titels in the sidebar i get keeping hit with this:

You’re making requests too quickly. We’ve temporarily limited access to your conversations to protect your data.

Please wait a few minutes before trying again.

Is this issue still happening?

A few details that could help narrow it down in case this is still happening:

  • Are you seeing it on the web, in the desktop/mobile app or both?
  • Which browser or app version are you using?
  • Does it happen every time you scroll the chat sidebar or only after reaching older conversations?
  • Does scrolling slowly versus quickly make any difference?
  • Does the warning disappear after waiting a few minutes or does it return immediately when you start scrolling again?
  • Have you tried another browser or a private/incognito window?

The exact wording seems to me like access to the conversation history is being temporarily throttled, so knowing where and how consistently it reproduces would be useful.

I was seeing it in the browser (chrome, chatgpt atlast and firefox) and the android app and also the chatgpt mac os app. its now i guess 16 hours later, atm i don’t see it pop up anymore when i scroll down my list, so maybe it was a combination from just to many chat deletes and title edit that the system went in a different mode and rate limited everything for a couple of hours.

Well that is a bit weird.

Which exact chat-management action triggers it fastest? For example, does it appear after several deletes, after several title edits or only once you start scrolling through older chats?

The scrolling and the reloading of the older chats in the sidebar seem to be the real tricker. Once you delete/archive a old chat, the sidebar kinda gets updated and seems to tricker that too many requests error. I guess i really just have to many chats (hence why i’m trying to manage them right now). It will take a while now with that temporary limit each time, but hopefully after that i wont see it anymore

That makes sense, that you’re continuing managing the chats as you already are, allowing some time between actions if/when the temporary limit appears.

Hopefully the issue will stop once you’ve reduced the number of older chats. If it continues even after that or keeps making chat management impractical, I’d recommend contacting Support and opening a support case with these reproduction details.
