Hello, I got more and more the impression, especially since GPT-5 came out, that I sometimes cannot continue a chat on ChatGPT mobile. BUT, it works fine the browser though. Anyone else?
And this seems to be actually a fairly common issue with the ChatGPT mobile app.
Here are the most likely causes and solutions I tried:
Common fixes to try:
-
Force close and restart the app → Completely closing the ChatGPT app and reopen it, no improvement.
-
Check internet connection → Tried switching between WiFi and mobile data to see if one works better, didn’t help (quite obvious, BUT did try anyway)
-
Update the app - Making sure I got the latest version from the app store
-
Clear the app’s cache (Android), I only tried android.
-
Restarting my phone - Sometimes helps with connectivity issues
Why this happens (my assumption):
-
The mobile app sometimes loses sync with OpenAI’s servers while the web version maintains connection, that’s at least what I guess.
-
Network connectivity issues that affect the app but not the browser
-
App-specific bugs or cache corruption ← that’s my most likely assumption.
-
Server-side issues that affect mobile clients differently, which seems also to be a case here.
If the problem persists (what I did):
-
I also tried logging out and back into the app
-
So this is why I now try to contact you guys from OpenAI
-
I use the web version as a workaround when the app isn’t working, respectively when I can’t use the chat in the app anymore. Really annoying.
The web version is generally more stable, seemingly, since it doesn’t rely on app-specific code that can have these sync issues, at least that’s my best guess.
P.S.: By the way the chat is also being seen clearly in the ChatGPT desktop app on PC.
So, the only place where it’s broken IS in the app on the android phone.
