Environment
-
Platforms: iOS ChatGPT App, Chrome & Safari (Web)
-
Model: GPT-5 (bug appears only after release)
-
Period observed: February 2025 onwards
Problem Overview
When an Audio Chat session is started inside an existing text conversation, the entire previous chat history in that thread becomes inaccessible.
Reproduction Path
-
Open an ongoing conversation with multiple turns of text.
-
Start Audio Chat (tap microphone).
-
End Audio Chat and return to text view.
-
Observe: only the very first user message remains. Everything else is replaced with GPT’s audio-transcribed replies. User’s own audio input does not show.
-
Model switching becomes unavailable in that thread (“audio not supported”).
Expected
-
Audio Chat should function as an optional overlay, without altering or deleting past conversation history.
-
Text messages must persist regardless of Audio Chat usage.
Impact
-
Two important threads already affected, including one containing critical work.
-
Other conversations (with Audio Chat before GPT-5 release) remain intact.
-
Issue reproducible consistently on iOS and Web.
-
App reinstallation / refresh does not restore history.

-
Provide fix timeline or workaround (e.g., disable Audio Chat from overriding text history).
