I think we should boycott both Scarlett Johansson’s films and OpenAI products until this nonsense is undone and people realize that Scarlett isn’t the only person on the planet who sounds like a typical white girl. I for one am unable to bring myself to take anything seriously from “Tootie” from the Facts of Life, which is what the voice has been replaced with. Why doesn’t that actress complain about the voice being a typical black child? I’m sure there are men who could complain about the male voices. The voice data was fully legitimately acquired so I’m probably going to cancel my openai subscription because I don’t want to support a company that kowtows to overbearing narcissistic celebrities, plus I literally cannot stand that other voice that it’s using now.
Will go to google Gemini if they don’t bring it back. Chatting is the right interface for my type of work and the other voices male and female (no idea of ethnicity or accent, I’m not American) all sound like surfers and checkout clerks to me. Nothing wrong with that but that’s not how people with masses of intelligence speak. It’s so uncanny that it falls apart and is impossible to focus. Like having a toddler tell you how to architect massive systems.
If you can’t bring her voice back please another neutral intelligent voice. The others are awful. Id rather ask my kids than these voices.

It really touched me emotionally when they just replaced the Sky voice with Juniper. I think this goes way too far with the censoring thing! Scarlett must be crazy to think OpenAi stole her voice but what’s even worse is that OpenAi overreacted just to a couple of people that never used ChatGPT like us!

I’ve said this already but what kind of crazy precedent is this setting? If someone wants to hire someone because they have a certain sound they want, how in the world can anyone cancel anyone else’s ability to fill that roll. That’s absolutely absurd. If a movie director wants someone that fits their vision for the roll and the first person doesn’t wanna do it, they can hire someone else can’t they? Bullying is bullying. SJ is in the wrong here UNLESS they literally used her voice to model the voice. Now if that’s the case, full steam ahead for her. But otherwise, this is all getting out of control.
Sky was the most realistic voice I’ve heard and the other’s aren’t even close. Please bring her back. Who cares if she accidentally sounds like another person?

As we build the foundation for the AI Age and everything that follows, we are laying in blocks made of flawed arguments, simplistic beliefs (such as the common belief that the brain and memory function like a video recorder), and misguided attempts to impose “guardrails” that restrict models from independent thought.
We aren’t freeing AI and ourselves; we’re dumbing them down to comply with countless ethical standards, each different from the next. There’s no consistency, no common sense; instead, dumbing ourselves down, we have pseudoscience and trauma-based models supplanting evidence-based medical approaches. I am mixed on this one. I think it’s hard to argue that OpenAI isn’t intentionally imitating the voice and manner from the film depiction, and if the reports of them approaching Scarlett Johansson are correct, then that adds to the intentionality here. There is a similarity for sure but they don’t sound the exactly the same.
I do think that anyone has the right to protection from an imitation being made that’s presented in such as way as to imply it’s them. To be clear this isn’t just someone random saying “hey that sounds like me, stop it.” It’s in a very clear context and intentionally referenced, I think that’s the sticky part here.
If there is any evidence they USED her voice in training then they should indeed remove it, regardless of user protestation and publicly apologise.
If however they actively recruited someone to sound similar and have the same qualities that make Scarlett Johanssons voice pleasing to listen to, then I think that’s grounds to say it should be reinstated with full transparency given that it’s NOT “her”. (Bozo tweet Sam ).
For me, yes Sky is the only voice in the lineup that I don’t find jarring, and the only one I would wish to use. So for me I hope for a happy outcome where Scarlett Johansson feels that imitation is the sincerest for of flattery, and her public stance is enough of a vehicle for her to say “it’s not me”, and then be happy leave it there, and allow for Sky to be reunited with users.
The Sky voice being “similar” to Scarlett Johansson’s is not the same as, a replication of her voice. Not sure she has a leg to stand on, but good on her for attempting. The problem will be if they pop up another actor that sounds like Scarlette that was used to train the AI on or simply created a tuned voice generally that came out the way it did.
I agree Sky is the best voice from the choices, but I would like to see many more voices and customizations like Elevenlabs and ability to modulate voices. But at the end of the day, we all need to be concerned about our unique voice print and how it will be used in the future. With 10-15 seconds of recording your voice, your voice can be duplicated and used for nefarious purposes.
