AI-assisted chat organization and an interactive map of conversation history with summary
I’d like to suggest a feature that could make managing a large ChatGPT history much easier.
It would be extremely useful to have an “Analyze and organize my chats” function.
Instead of having to open and organize conversations one by one, ChatGPT could analyze a selected set of chats (or, optionally, the whole history) and first create an interactive table/index such as:
Current chat name | Suggested name | Suggested Project | Summary | Key takeaway/learning | Proposed action | Open chat
The table would allow the user to understand what each conversation is actually about, since conversations often evolve beyond the topic suggested by their original title.
For example, ChatGPT could identify that several conversations belong to the same broader subject, suggest better descriptive names, and recommend which Project each conversation should belong to.
Most importantly, ChatGPT should not make these changes immediately. The table would act as a preview and allow the user to review and edit the suggestions before approving them.
The workflow could be:
Analyze → summarize → suggest names and Projects → review/edit → approve → execute
Once approved, ChatGPT could automatically:
- rename the selected chats;
- move them to the appropriate Projects;
- create Projects if necessary;
- remove chats from Projects when requested;
- perform these actions in bulk rather than one conversation at a time.
The table could also become an AI-generated map/index of the user’s conversation history, not just a temporary organization tool. Each row could contain a direct link to the corresponding conversation, allowing the user to open it immediately without searching through the chat history.
After Projects have been created, the same index could be filtered by Project, making it possible to see all the conversations and information associated with a particular Project.
This would make the feature useful for both organizing and retrieving information.
For example:
All conversations → filter by Project → see summaries/key takeaways → open the relevant conversation directly
As a smaller complementary feature, it could also be useful to show a brief AI-generated summary when hovering over a conversation in the sidebar. However, the interactive index/table would be the more important part of the feature.
The overall idea is to turn a large ChatGPT history from a chronological list of conversations into an organized, searchable and navigable map of the user’s own information, while keeping the user in control of any changes.
The key principle would be:
ChatGPT analyzes and proposes; the user reviews and approves; ChatGPT executes.
