Feature request: intelligent chat history management
Long-term ChatGPT users can accumulate hundreds or thousands of chats. The current tools — rename, archive, delete, search, and projects — are not enough to manage that history at scale.
ChatGPT should be able to help users organize their own chat history intelligently, including:
-
Bulk archive/delete suggestions
-
AI-generated summaries for old chats
-
Automatic topic clustering
-
Project recommendations
-
Colour labels or tag labels
-
“Active / Archive / Junk” classification
-
Ability to create a master archive index
-
Safe review-before-delete workflow
-
Search by remembered topic, not just exact title/text
-
Migration tools for moving related chats into Projects
Example user request:
“Clean up my history. Keep active projects visible, archive old useful chats, delete obvious junk, and create a project index.”
The assistant should be able to propose a plan, show the suggested changes, let the user approve, and then apply them.
This would make ChatGPT feel less like a pile of old conversations and more like an actual long-term assistant.
