Add Multi-Select and Bulk Delete Options for Chat History

I have many chat topics displayed in the left sidebar, and over time the list becomes difficult to manage. Currently, I do not see an option to select and delete multiple unwanted chats at once. Because of this limitation, I often end up using “Delete all chats,” even though I want to keep some important conversations.

Suggested enhancement:

  • Add a selection mode with a checkbox next to each chat.

  • Allow users to select multiple chats and delete them together.

  • Provide “Select All” and “Deselect All” options.

  • Allow selection by date, such as chats older than 30, 60, or 90 days.

  • Include a confirmation message before permanently deleting selected chats.

  • Optionally allow users to archive chats instead of deleting them.

Business use case:

Users who have a large number of conversations need an efficient way to organize and clean up their chat history. Bulk selection would allow them to remove unwanted chats while preserving important conversations. It would improve sidebar organization and may also help users who experience perceived slowness when managing a long chat list.

Currently, deleting all chats is the only practical cleanup option I can find, which can result in the loss of valuable conversations. A multi-select and bulk-delete feature would provide users with better control over their chat history and improve the overall user experience.

Currently, users with many conversations may find the left sidebar crowded and difficult to manage. There is no convenient way to select and delete multiple unwanted chats. Because of this, users may delete their entire chat history even when some conversations are important and should be preserved.

Suggested features:

  1. Multi-select and bulk actions

  • Add checkboxes to select multiple chats.

  • Provide “Select All” and “Deselect All” options.

  • Allow selected chats to be deleted, archived, or moved to a category.

  • Display a confirmation message before permanent deletion.

  1. Optional chat categories or folders

When creating a new chat, users could optionally assign it to a category. If no category is selected, the chat would be saved under “General” or “Uncategorized.”

Example categories:

  • Important

  • Critical

  • Personal

  • Work

  • Miscellaneous

  • General/Uncategorized

Users should also be able to create, rename, organize, and delete their own custom categories. When deleting a category, ChatGPT should ask whether its chats should be moved to “Uncategorized” or permanently deleted.

  1. Sorting and filtering

Allow users to sort or filter conversations by:

  • Category

  • Most recent or oldest

  • Recently updated

  • Alphabetical order

  • Important or pinned

  • Custom date range

  1. Custom automatic deletion

Provide an optional auto-delete setting that allows users to enter their preferred retention period.

For example:

“Automatically delete chats older than ___ days.”

The number of days should be defined by the user, such as 30, 60, 90, 180, or any custom value.

Additional safeguards could include:

  • Exclude pinned or important chats from automatic deletion by default.

  • Allow auto-delete rules to be applied only to selected categories.

  • Notify users before scheduled deletion.

  • Provide a temporary trash or recovery period.

  • Allow users to disable auto-delete at any time.

Business value:

These features would help users organize large conversation histories, locate important chats quickly, and remove unwanted conversations without deleting everything. Custom auto-delete would give users better control over data retention while reducing manual cleanup and sidebar clutter.

This would be especially useful for people who use ChatGPT for multiple purposes, including work, personal matters, research, education, and long-term projects.

I’ve been using ChatGPT for around three years, primarily for software development, research, and personal tasks. As my chat history has grown, organizing conversations and selectively deleting unwanted chats has become increasingly difficult, which motivated this feature request.

I am not an OpenAI employee. I’ve been volunteering here since around 2021. A great place to learn more is the Ongoing Community history thread which has a lot of valuable information.

We do have OpenAI staff on the site, though. There’s an indicator on the accounts whether they’re staff or not. The history thread explains a lot more about this place, though, imho.

Yeah, ChatGPT has evolved a lot since the early days, but they’re still improving. The mini-index for long threads was something great, so I’m sure they’ll be looking at solutions for mass-deleting threads, etc.

This is a must now. I was previously using a Chrome extension that solved this problem, but as of July, it’s rate-limited.
