Feature Request: Highlight text in responses to ask follow-up questions in a pop-up box

What is the feature request?
I would like to suggest a feature that allows users to highlight specific text/words within a ChatGPT response, which then triggers a small pop-up box or side panel to ask follow-up questions about that selected text directly.

Why is this needed? (The pain point)
Currently, when reading long or technical responses, I often encounter jargon, professional terminology, or specific phrases that I don’t understand.
If I type a question about it in the main chat bar at the bottom, the entire screen automatically scrolls down to the very end of the chat. After getting the answer, I have to scroll all the way back up to find my original place in the long response, which is very inconvenient and disrupts the reading flow.

How it should work:

  1. Highlight: The user highlights a specific word or phrase in ChatGPT’s message.
  2. Pop-up: A small UI tool/box appears near the text (similar to a “Define” or “Search” tool, or Google Docs comment style).
  3. Ask & Reply: The user can type a quick question (e.g., “What does this term mean?”), and ChatGPT provides a concise explanation right inside that small box or side panel without scrolling the main chat window.

This feature would greatly improve user experience, readability, and learning efficiency on the platform. Thank you!

Hey @anto_on!

This would be especially helpful when reading a long or technical response. Being able to select an unfamiliar term and ask about it without being taken away from that section would make it much easier to keep your place and follow the explanation.

The pop-up or side-panel approach you described could also keep quick clarification questions from interrupting the main conversation.

I can’t promise or share a timeline for changes like this, but I’ll pass your suggestion along internally.
