Feature Request: Mini-chats for specific parts of a ChatGPT response

When ChatGPT gives a long response, I often have a small question about just one specific line or section.

It would be great if I could select a part of the response → Reply / Ask about this, which opens a small mini-chat focused only on that selected context.

For example:

Select: “Step 3: Configure the API…”

→ Ask: “Why do I need to do this?”

→ ChatGPT answers with that section as the context.

The user could then choose:

Keep in main chat — retain the mini-chat and its context.

Temporary — treat it like a vanishing mini-chat that disappears when closed and doesn’t affect the main conversation.

I think this would make long explanations, tutorials, coding help, and learning much easier to navigate without cluttering the main conversation.

I’d also be happy to build a working demo/prototype using Copilot (since Codex isn’t free for me) if the OpenAI team is interested. If you’d like to see a prototype or discuss the idea further, feel free to reach out to me through this forum.

I independently arrived at almost the same idea today while using ChatGPT for long, technical conversations.

I think the key value is not simply having another chat window — it is context isolation.

My preferred interaction would be:

Select part of a ChatGPT response → show:

Ask ChatGPT | Quick Ask

“Ask ChatGPT” would behave as it does today and continue the main conversation.

“Quick Ask” would open a small sidecar conversation, ideally in a right-hand panel, centered on the selected passage.

The sidecar should not automatically inherit the entire conversation context. By default, it could receive the selected passage plus only the minimum surrounding context needed to understand it.

This would be especially useful for questions such as:

“What does this term mean?”

“Why is this step necessary?”

“Where did this equation come from?”

“Can you explain this sentence in more detail?”

These are often one- or two-turn clarification questions. Today, asking them either pollutes the main conversation or requires creating a branch/new chat.

The sidecar could be temporary by default, while still offering actions such as:

Keep side chat

or

Promote to main conversation

I think this could improve long technical, educational, research, and coding conversations substantially. It could also potentially reduce unnecessary context processing when the question genuinely only requires a small part of the conversation.

I would also be very interested in participating in future ChatGPT product research, usability studies, beta testing, or a user advisory panel. I use ChatGPT heavily and frequently notice workflow and interaction ideas like this through actual daily use.
