Why Can't I Upload Files Over 50MB to OpenAI via Both Windows App and Browser?

Hello OpenAI Community,

I’ve been trying to upload files through both the OpenAI browser interface and the Windows app, but I’m encountering consistent issues when handling files over a certain size. Here’s what’s happening:

  1. File Details:
  • File Sizes: 117MB and 150MB (both .txt files).
  • Nature of Files: Plain text, intended for large-scale processing with AI models.
  1. Error Message:
  • On both platforms, I’m receiving the error: Failed upload to files.oaiusercontent.com. Please ensure your network settings allow access to this site or contact your network administrator.
  1. Steps I’ve Taken:
  • Tried uploading on different networks to rule out connection issues.
  • Attempted to split and compress the files, but still ran into issues when the files exceeded ~50MB.
  • Both the Windows app and browser versions failed with the same error.
  1. Questions:
  • Is there a strict upload size limit? If yes, where is it documented?
  • Could this be due to my network setup, or is this a universal limitation in OpenAI systems?
  • Are there any recommended workarounds for processing large files with OpenAI tools?

Any insights, tips, or documentation references would be greatly appreciated. I just need clarification on whether this is a hard cap or something configurable on my end.

Thanks in advance!

How many tokens?

All text and document files uploaded to a GPT or to a ChatGPT conversation are capped at 2M tokens per file. This limitation does not apply to spreadsheets.

For CSV files or spreadsheets, the file size cannot exceed approximately 50MB.
Thanks!
