Why can’t Plus users pay $20 more for extra o3 / GPT‑4.5 / GPT‑5 usage?

If you’re a ChatGPT Plus subscriber ($20/month) and hit your usage cap for o3 / 4.5 / GPT‑5, there’s no flexible upgrade path. Your current options:
(note: 5 is not released yet. yet! :D)

  • Wait for the next billing cycle
  • Upgrade to Pro ($200+/month) — unaffordable for most
  • Create a second Plus account with a different email (inconvenient, fragmented)

Team plan? Only available with annual commitment — not viable for indie developers or creative professionals.

(!) Why this is a huge mistake:

  • Many users would happily pay an extra $20–$30 to continue using advanced models within the same account
  • This is pure revenue with minimal technical effort
  • Right now, users hit a wall and walk away — or go elsewhere

I ran out of o3. I’m doing mathematical / programming work, and I bought Grok‑4 for $30 — and it was a huge disappointment, because even after 4–5 hours of struggle it still couldn’t give a good mathematical answer.

The next day, when I came back (I had received a few new messages), on the second prompt it gave an almost perfect answer while constructing functions…

In other words: o3 is WAY better than Grok‑4 in what I’m working on, and I could have paid that $30 to OpenAI instead.

Now I have to create a new account, which is a huge workflow mistake, because it doesn’t have (2+year Plus) memory other message contexts, and when I go back to continue, it’s complicated to transfer the messages.
