Why are Project chats showing in Recent?

I use Projects as separate workspaces for long-term work such as research, coding, reports, and planning. Each Project has its own context, files, and conversations, so separation is important for focus and organization.

I use Projects every day, and this change is very noticeable. Before the recent update, Project chats did not show up in Recent like this. Now they do, and it breaks the workflow.

Right now, Project chats also appear in Recent. This makes Projects feel more like labels than real workspaces.

The issue is not just clutter. It also causes unnecessary context switching: when I open Recent for one task, I get pulled back into unrelated projects.

If a chat already belongs to a Project, it should stay inside that Project unless I choose otherwise.

Please add a simple toggle:

Hide Project chats from Recent

Noticed the same issue today. Very annoying. Please revert or add a setting.

I have the same problem. My recent chats are now chaotic. Why Open AI changed the previous setting?

Please revert back. It clutters the workflow and causes confusion.

I really hope they fix this because this change is awful. One of the main reasons to have proyects is to avoid seeing them all in recent chats.

I really need this to be fixed !

I agree. The mess in the “recent” is very frustrating to me.

it’s a total chaos now with your chats

Agreed. Please revert back or at least add a setting. This is really messy and diminishes certain advantages of using projects

Agreed, this is Very frustrating. The only way I can see around it right now is to create a Misc project for all non-project chats, but then that adds another layer of context for chats that really arent related. I like the toggle idea to remove Project chats from Recents, or a third section of just Non-Project chats.

This is super annoying and completely breaks the system. Someone like me getting distracted so easily, needs to arrange his work to avoid distractions. This is a completely failed design

This is super super annoying because what is the point of PROJECTS anyways if you have “RECENT” bullshit? How do you know if it’s non-projects vs. projects chat in RECENT?

TURN THIS OFF or I will cancel my subscription and move to Claude.

To anyone and everyone who works at OpenAI, answer this question now! Is this a bug or an intentional change!?

I agree. Total chaos and a failed system if this is where they are taking 5.5. This is where the magic/uniqueness/advantage takes place. For those who use the tool for more than just casual fun this limits its functionality. I couldn’t agree more with everyone who has posted.

This is a Red Alert! THIS IS A RED ALERT! This is not a bug! They did this on purpose! Here’s my response from Support!

We appreciate you for taking the time to follow up regarding how chats behave after being moved into Project folders. We understand how this can be confusing, especially when you expect chats to disappear from your main view after organizing them, and we sincerely apologize for any frustration this may have caused. Please rest assured that we are here to clarify this for you.

In the current experience, moving a chat into a Project folder does not automatically remove it from the “Recent” list. The “Recent” section is designed to show chats based on recent activity, meaning any conversation you’ve recently opened, updated, or interacted with may continue to appear there—even if it has already been organized into a folder or Project.

Because of this design, when you refresh the page, those chats can still appear under “Recent” if they are still considered recently active in your account. This does not mean the chat was not successfully moved; rather, it exists in both contexts:

  • Organized within the Project folder

  • Visible in “Recent” due to recent interaction

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out — we’ll be happy to assist you further.

We need to push back hard, fast, relentlessly, mercilessly, and now!

I’m posting this as product feedback, not a support request. Support has confirmed this is intentional behavior, but the current design makes “Move to Project” misleading because moved chats continue appearing in Recent after refresh.

@toradrow777 respond with the following to their message
Thank you for clarifying that this behavior is intentional. That clarification is helpful, but it also confirms the core problem: this is not a bug in the narrow technical sense, but it is a serious product-design and user-experience issue.

When a user moves a chat into a Project folder, the ordinary meaning of “move” is that the chat has been relocated from the main/general workspace into that Project. If the chat continues appearing in the main “Recent” list after refresh, the interface strongly suggests that the move did not actually work.

I understand that “Recent” is activity-based. However, the current implementation creates a conflict between two user expectations:

  1. Projects are presented as an organization system.

  2. Recent continues displaying chats that the user has already organized into Projects.

That makes Projects feel less like folders and more like tags, while the UI language and workflow imply folder-like behavior. This is confusing, visually cluttering, and undermines user trust in the organization model.

At minimum, I believe this needs one of the following changes:

  • Add an option to hide Project-contained chats from the main Recent list.

  • Add a filter for “Unfiled / Not in a Project” chats.

  • Change the confirmation language when moving a chat so users are told it may still appear in Recent.

  • Reconsider whether “Move to Project” is the correct wording if the chat remains visible in both contexts.

The issue is not simply that I dislike seeing items in Recent. The issue is that the product tells me I have organized something, then continues presenting it in a way that makes the organization appear incomplete or failed.

Please escalate this as product feedback. This behavior creates unnecessary confusion and makes Projects much less useful for users who rely on them for serious workspace organization.

Yes! This is driving me crazy. Now my Recents is way to cluttered and I like separating my chats for work from my personal chat threads, now everything is all mixed up.

I agree. This really should be an option you can toggle

I joined this site just to complain about this issue. This change seems poorly thought out. They should at least give us the option of hiding chats already sent to folders. My OCD is going off hard.

Calling in from the East Coast of the US, it is FIXED!!!
