This is an issue I’ve just randomly started experiencing all of a sudden. I really hope this gets fixed as I use projects to seperate contents, so chats to show up in recents makes it very confusing!

This is now happening for me and my users now too. It sounds like it was fixed earlier in the month but was the change re-rolled out?
I would really like this feature removed or made optional, so I can opt out of.
It only creates clutter.
This issue has appeared again for me today, May 27, on both desktop and mobile. Until yesterday, chats inside Projects were not shown in the general Recents list.
Now all recently opened project chats are exposed in the main sidebar, which destroys the purpose of using Projects as organised private folders. Projects should keep their chats inside the project only, or there should at least be a setting to hide project chats from Recents.
Please revert this behavior or add a “Hide project chats from Recents” option.
I’m also seeing this issue again today on both Android and web.
Project chats are now mixed into the global Recents list, which makes it much harder to manage general chats. For users who use Projects as separate workspaces, Recents used to be useful because it helped keep standalone chats separate from project work. Now the list is cluttered with project conversations.
I also noticed inconsistent behaviour on Android: a chat I just used may appear in Recents, then disappear from the list after opening/interacting/leaving the chat.
Please consider reverting this or adding a filter/setting to hide Project chats from global Recents, or to separate General chats from Project chats.
Porfavor que vuelva lo de antes, que desastre. Me he unido a la comunidad solo para quejarme, los proyectos no tienen utilidad si igual va a salir en recientes, solo crea más ruido visual.
Porfavor, no sé quién haya tenido la mala idea, pero de verdad que es un error, o aunque sea pongan un acceso para que podamos decidir que interfaz quiere uno para que pueda volver al anterior.

I really appreciate the Projects feature and spent time organizing my chats into folders.
However, Recents now shows chats that are already inside Projects, creating duplicate clutter and making the sidebar difficult to manage.
Before, Projects felt more like true folders. Now it is difficult to identify which chats are not assigned to a Project, especially for users with many folders and chats.
The current setup makes organization harder rather than easier.
Please consider adding one or more of these options:
• Hide Project chats from Recents
• Show only non Project chats in Recents
• Let users choose how Recents behaves
Projects are a great feature, but they would feel much cleaner and more functional if Recents did not duplicate already organized chats.
I would like to share feedback about the recent behavior change with ChatGPT Projects and the Recent chats list. Previously, chats placed inside a Project felt self-contained and did not clutter the root Recent list, which made Projects work more like true folders. Now, Project chats appear mixed into the main Recent list, which makes it much harder to keep unrelated workspaces organized and defeats part of the purpose of using Projects. Please consider adding a setting to “Hide Project chats from Recent” or an “Unfiled / Not in a Project” filter so users can choose whether Recent shows all activity or only chats outside Projects.

This issue happened again and really annoying. This breaks my workflow. Please fix as soon as possible !
It seems to have been fixed again.
However, I don’t quite understand why a “recent” feature needs to be added. Project folders are already displayed in the order of most recent opening. The same applies to chats within each project. So users can already tell which items were accessed recently.
Would it not be better to simply show other chats that are not part of any project and label them “Uncategorized” or something similar? IMO, it would be better to keep the interface minimal for easier navigation.

Update from my side:
I’m seeing a slightly different behaviour now, and it seems related to the new sidebar/chat organization changes.
On web, I now have an “Organize chats” option with two choices:

Single list
-
By project
When I select “By project” on web, the behaviour is much better: project chats no longer clutter the general recent chats list in the same way.
However, on Android, I can see that the sidebar/layout has also changed, but I do not have the same “By project” option. So Android seems to have received part of the new chat organization, but not the control that fixes the issue.
I also noticed that pinned chats/projects behave differently: when something is pinned, it no longer appears in Recents. But since there seems to be a limit of 10 pinned items, this is not a practical workaround for users with many projects/chats.
So, at least in my case:

Has anyone on Android already received the “By project” option? Or is this currently web-only?
It feels like the web version has the complete fix, while Android is still in an incomplete rollout state. Would be helpful to know if others are seeing the same thing on Android or iOS.
I get this issue as well. The UI design is very cumbersome all round.
When we move a chat into a project it should only be displayed in the project folder. It already shifts the order of them to show the most recent at the top.
The rest of the chat should be unorganised chats. We should be able to turn off showing project chats in the recents side bar.
Additionally, we should be able to clear out all unorganised chats without affecting any project chats.
As well as that, the chat should at least be separated by the month they last used and we should be able to filter by month too.
These are basic front end tasks to implement, it’s highly frustrating I can just build a UI and use my subscription over API usage so I can just have a half decent front end to use.
Thanks for sharing this feedback. Since this thread was opened, ChatGPT on the web has added an option to organize Recents as one combined list or group chats by project. You can read more in our June 18 ChatGPT release notes.
This addresses the main organization concern on the web. Our current documentation does not confirm a separate “Hide Project chats” option or the same control in the native mobile apps, so we’ll share those remaining requests with our product team.
We can’t provide a timeline for further changes, but we appreciate the detailed feedback. I’ll close this thread now.
