My codex usage reset today – I saw 100% an hour ago. I didn’t use codex in that time. I check, and its at 96% weekly and 70% 5h usage limit – I did not use code review or do anything that triggered that, or use codex in any way.
Wait – as I was typing this I checked again, its now at 50% 5H usage and 92% weekly – it’s continuing to actively use up my limits. Why? What is it? How do I manage that and disable it?
I am aware of how to stop a thread. I never started one to begin with. As I said, I did not use codex — have not in about 4 days, and when I decided to use it I noted that my usage is being consumed without having done anything, and wrote up this post before ever sending a prompt to codex.
The lack of transparency around token or usage consumption isn’t unique to OpenAI—it shows up across most platforms in this space.
While it’s fine to raise concerns here on the forum, it’s worth noting that OpenAI developers tend to be more responsive on GitHub, particularly in the Codex issues tracker:

Issue #14593 (usage / transparency concerns) - this is the issue the OpenAI staff have noted where they are tracking the issue.
These threads show that others are running into similar problems, and they occasionally include useful developer feedback or workarounds.
If this is something you care about, the most effective step is to upvote () the relevant issues—especially #14593—and track them for updates. That’s currently the primary signal used to prioritize feature work.
