This warning continues to appear even though the number of characters is well below the allowed number, what’s happening to ChatGPT 4?

I have the same problem and I’ve never seen it before… Surely they haven’t reduced it by that much!? it used to be 32k tokens right? Hopefully it’s just a bug but maybe they’ll start pushing for a more expensive subscription for longer chat lengths. I couldn’t submit a 3k tokens (17000 character) prompt but it let me submit a 2.5k token (14000 character) question. If that’s the new limit it will push a lot of people to just use the API instead.

But it seems strange to me that they reduced the limit without notifying us first and without making a more expensive option available first. In my opinion it’s a bug but it probably hasn’t been reported to the team yet.

Truthfully I haven’t run into this issue. I am wondering if you can squeeze in more tokens by using a custom GPT with all the features turned off?

I hope you’re right! I’ve reported it but can’t find anything on the discord either so maybe we’re just unlucky today. It could be part of rate limiting maybe… all speculation for now

Just got this reply, looks like a bug:
Hi there, Thank you for reaching out and reporting the issue you’re experiencing with message length limits in ChatGPT Plus. I understand how this can be confusing, especially without any recent announcements regarding changes to token limits. To clarify, ChatGPT Plus does not have a specific “token limit” per message that’s publicly documented as a fixed number, as the limits can vary based on several factors including the model being used and the type of plan (Plus, Team, etc.). However, experiencing a significant reduction in the acceptable message length from 2.5k tokens to 3k tokens without any changes being reported is indeed unusual. Given the details you’ve provided, it seems like there might be a misunderstanding or a potential issue affecting the service. Here are a few steps and considerations: Model Differences: If you’re using different models (e.g., GPT-3.5 vs. GPT-4), it’s worth noting that they might handle token limits differently. However, based on your message, it seems like you’re comparing the same task under similar conditions. Temporary Glitches: Sometimes, temporary glitches or system updates can cause unexpected behavior. If this issue persists, it might not be a temporary glitch, but it’s something to consider. Community Reports: Since you mentioned that lots of others have this problem, it could indicate a broader issue that needs to be addressed by our technical team. To help us investigate this issue further, could you please provide the following information:

  • The exact error message you’re receiving.
  • The model you’re using when this issue occurs (e.g., GPT-3.5, GPT-4).
  • Any specific patterns you’ve noticed that might help us identify the problem (time of day, specific types of content, etc.). Rest assured, we take reports of potential bugs seriously, and your detailed feedback is invaluable in helping us improve the service. Once we have more information, we can look into this issue more thoroughly and provide you with an update. Thank you for your patience and for bringing this to our attention. We’re here to help and ensure you have the best experience with ChatGPT Plus. Best,

In addition to this ridiculous limit appeared in the last 24 hours (a few hundred words at max in the prompt) it doesn’t even recognize text files anymore, it’s giving hallucinations at full blast and it’s been going on since yesterday. According to the open AI Status page everything is fine and there is no problem. It’s all very strange.

as I said I’ve reported it, maybe it would help if you report it as well. I’ve asked for credits for the API until the bug gets fixed, I’d recommend you do the same.

The same thing happening here. It is quite strange that the issue has persisted for close to 24 hrs without any update.

Yeah, so weird. I sent an email to the support team but I doubt they’ll even look at it.

I am also getting this problem. Never had an issue before using the prompts. I will report it too.

Same here, even like yesterday, i could use prompts that had double my current texts. The performance of GPT4 has not been good, the output is vague. I don’t see the point of using gpt plus anymore.

I’m getting the same thing in the last 24 hours as well, it is very discouraging that there is a bug for almost every day. GPT-4 talking nonsense, outages, slowdowns, now this… I’m using ChatGPT Teams subscription which has a steep price for this kind of service, I feel like a beta tester, why can’t they provide reliable service at least for the team plan? I’m willing to pay for it. I’ve reported the bug to the customer service. Also, you cannot save your messages as a backup in email, but you can with the Plus plan, like the Team plan is still in beta?

Finally, the ChatGPT Team plan officially supports 32K, still I’m getting this annoying message.

update: when I was on the Plus plan, I was able to use 32K there as well, so this might be encouragement for people that it’s probably just a bug with the Plus plan as well. Also, the “continue” button wasn’t working that night, and interestingly, at the moment when it has started working again is the moment when 32K token limit broke down.

Good news, I have the solution! I needed to clear browsing data. Since it happened less the 24 hours ago, it was enough to do it for the last 24 hours you may need to it for 7 days.

In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear Browsing Data

If you want to check if this the culprit before you resort to this, try chatgpt in a different browser.

NOTE that clearing browsing data may sign you out from sites so make sure you have the means to sign back before clearing browsing data.

I’m happy now.

Having the same issue, for both question context window and file uploads of both .doc and .pdf.

I agree with you! I pay every month 20$ and I expected, that I will have a bit more freedom to use it for coding. I would like to compare some codes and the reduction of size is not really helpful.

I’ve tried everything, but it didn’t work

Having the same issue, how to resolve it?

The exact error message:The message you submitted was too long, please reload the conversation and submit something shorter.
The model: ChatGPT 4o with canvas
Once this message apaeared, there is only “regenerate” left, can’t prompt.

It’s not normal that they just leave us in the dark like this without giving any further information, nothing works. Are there no moderators on this forum? To comment on what’s going on? If this continues, I’ll cancel my Plus subscription immediately. Just leaving us with no information… they must have noticed by now that something’s wrong… Or maybe they’ve changed the service without mentioning anything about it. I’ll wait a bit longer. Has anyone been in contact with customer support or moderator or something? I’m curious. I can’t continue with my projects for now until it’s working again, my work has been stalled for several days.
