Voice started inside a Codex project opens a standalone new chat

Summary

In the Windows desktop app, starting Voice from a new or existing conversation inside a Codex project now opens a separate “New voice chat” outside the project.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open any existing Codex project.
  2. Create or open a conversation inside that project.
  3. Select the Voice control.
  4. Start speaking.

Actual result

Voice opens as a separate, standalone new chat. It is not attached to the project, does not appear to inherit the project’s context or instructions, and the original project conversation is not continued. This occurs regardless of which project is used.

Expected result

Voice launched from a project conversation should either continue in that conversation or clearly create a voice task that remains attached to the same project and inherits its project context.

Why it matters

Projects are used to retain working context and operating instructions. Detaching Voice breaks that continuity and can cause voice sessions to miss project-specific commands and history.

Request

Please confirm whether this is intended behavior after the recent desktop and Voice updates. If not, please treat it as a project-context handoff regression. If it is intended, please provide a supported way to start Voice while preserving project membership and context.

Confirmed reproduction detail

I reproduced this in the Windows desktop app:

  1. From inside a project, create a new chat and send a typed message. The chat is associated with that project.
  2. Reopen that same chat and start Voice mode. The voice session remains associated with the project.
  3. In contrast, from inside a project, use New Chat and start directly in Voice mode without first sending a typed message. It opens as a standalone “New voice chat” and is no longer associated with the project.

So Voice mode itself can preserve project context; the regression appears specific to creating a voice-first chat from a project’s New Chat control. Expected behavior: the voice-first path should create a chat that remains attached to the originating project.
