Token-Based Secure Interaction Between ChatGPT and User-Owned Web Services

Description

Please consider enabling a token-based, user-authenticated mechanism to allow ChatGPT to safely interact with live user-owned web services — such as querying a private site, submitting a form, or reading application responses — only when explicitly authorized.

This would unlock powerful real-world use cases without compromising security or trust.

Example Use Case

Imagine a user running a secure internal dashboard or API for their business (e.g., a booking system, inventory tool, or custom monitoring page). They want ChatGPT to:

  • Inspect or test the site
  • Interpret results
  • Help debug issues live
  • Or validate UI/API responses

To enable this safely, they configure the target server to return a special X-GPT-Token header with each response, matching a GUID that ChatGPT previously generated.

If the header is missing or invalid, ChatGPT stops interacting immediately.

Security Safeguards

To prevent abuse or injection:

  • The first request must be a GET, ensuring no side effects.
  • ChatGPT must stop immediately if the expected X-GPT-Token header is not present.
  • Optional: a DNS TXT record (_gpt-auth) could be used to confirm domain ownership.
  • Interactions should be scoped to the initiating session and user-specific.
  • All interactions must respect CORS and sandbox boundaries to avoid proxy-based spoofing.

Why This Matters

Currently, there’s no supported mechanism for ChatGPT to safely interact with a user-owned site — even when the user controls both ends.

This limits powerful, low-risk, high-trust workflows, such as:

  • Live debugging of internal tools
  • Code review on deployed pages
  • Guided website testing and verification
  • Controlled form input validation

Summary

A simple, opt-in token-based handshake protocol would make it safe and effective for ChatGPT to assist with live diagnostics and QA workflows, without compromising the system’s general sandboxing guarantees.
