Title: Allow users to switch an existing conversation from Work mode back to Chat mode

I would like to suggest an improvement to the new Work mode in ChatGPT.

Currently, when a conversation is started in Work mode, it appears to remain locked to Work mode. If the Work quota is exhausted, the user can no longer continue that same conversation until the quota resets.

The only workaround seems to be creating a new conversation in Chat mode, but this creates several problems:

  • The full context of the original conversation is lost or fragmented.
  • Long technical projects may contain many messages, files, decisions, tests, and corrections.
  • Re-uploading files and explaining the whole project again is inefficient.
  • Work mode may only be needed temporarily for intensive tasks, while the rest of the discussion could continue perfectly well in normal Chat mode.

It would therefore be very useful to add a simple option such as:

“Switch to Chat mode”

inside an existing Work conversation.

Ideally, the user could switch between:

Chat → Work → Chat

while keeping the exact same conversation history, uploaded files, context, and project continuity.

A practical example:

I was working on a software development project inside a long Work conversation. My Work quota reached 0%, but I still wanted to continue discussing code corrections and technical decisions. These tasks did not necessarily require Work mode anymore.

However, because the conversation remained in Work mode, I had to wait for the quota reset or create a completely new Chat conversation.

For long-running development, research, engineering, or document projects, being able to switch modes inside the same conversation would significantly improve usability.

Thank you for considering this feature.

Thanks for the suggestion! We’ll share the request to switch between Chat and Work in the same conversation while keeping its history and files. Projects can currently keep related chats together: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521. We don’t have a timeline for in-place switching.
