Timestamps for chats in ChatGPT

Hey, I made neatflowai and it has timestamps for messages. Hope you like it. Cheers!

It would be helpful if the answer’s timestamp could appear in the bottom-right corner of each response, showing how long it’s been since the last interaction.

Reason:
When using ChatGPT alongside other AI apps in different tabs, I sometimes forget which AI I interacted with last, especially during a busy schedule. A visible timestamp showing the time elapsed since the last response would help me track how long it’s been since our conversation began, making it easier to stay organized and avoid confusion.

I have attached a screenshot to highlight the area where the timestamp should appear.

I agree with a lot of posters on this feature suggestion, and have a new use case to consider:

I wanted to be able to see timestamps on my message history so I could show others how I got a task done faster using ChatGPT than it would have probably taken otherwise.

I worked on a Bash script with ChatGPT recently. It took about four or five iterations of testing and fixing the script to get it to where I wanted.

In hindsight, if I had done my normal Bash scripting approach (a lot of Googling and going through command documentation or forum posts,–because my memory of specific Bash syntax is fading–and trying different things to see if they work, lots of trial/error on my way to the finished script), my guess is that it would have been a 40 to 60 minute task, and when working with ChatGPT, I’m pretty sure it was faster than 40 min (somewhere between 15 and 30 min), but I’d like to be able look at timestamps and see for sure.

I saw other messages on this feature suggestion that said that the data is there, but is not surfaced in the UI, so I asked, in that same conversation, if it could tell me the time difference between the start of the conversation and a particular message (“it worked! thanks!”) I posted when the finished version of the script passed my testing. It couldn’t, and suggested that I make a feature suggestion.

Yeah, they NEED to add timestamps. OTHERWISE I’LL BE LIKE A CAVEMAN NINJA AND HIT 'EM WITH A CLUB!

Timestamps would help track when certain parts of a conversation happened, especially in longer discussions where I return later to continue.

Suggestion for Improving the Experience of Free Users

Hello OpenAI,

I’d like to suggest two improvements for users who are on the free plan and do not have Plus/Pro access:

  1. Indication of Remaining Interactions
  • It would be helpful to display a counter showing how many messages can still be sent before the chat is blocked. This would allow users to better manage their interactions.
  1. Timestamp for Sent and Received Messages
  • Currently, there is no time reference in conversations. Displaying the time of each message would help users organize their interactions more efficiently, especially for long or collaborative tasks.

I believe these enhancements would make the experience smoother and more user-friendly for everyone. Thank you for the incredible work you do!

absolutely necessary. i wonder what made them not include timestamps. have they never used any chat program whatsoever?
and once they’re there (i really hope theyre already there but hidden so the past can get organized retroactively), wouldnt it be cool if we could ask chat gpt what we did around a certain date? automatic diary!

This feature is desperately needed! Seems odd (silly) we even have to ask for this as an enhanced “feature” lol

I think that not everyone needs timestamps. Their absence creates:
Firstly, endless conversation, which helps to distract from real life when necessary. That is, it helps in reflection.
Secondly, it helps to create a sense of “here and now”, when you need to be focused on the task.

Suggestion: make it possible to include timestamps for messages, if necessary.

This is a most please , use cases are multiple.

Yes please.

This is even more important now that we have projects. Chats do have timestamps internally, and they get updated to the current time when you click on a chat (or move it into a project), even if there is no update to the chat. This completely messes up the order of chats in a project.

UPDATE

There were several other threads asking for timestamps, and I flagged them for merging into this one. Apparently they got deleted instead. Just wanted to mention this to make clear the amount of demand for this trivial feature, in case someone from OpenAI actually reads this forum any more.

Hear, hear!

This would be an immeasurable help when it comes to time-tracking the work I do for my clients.

Hi, coming back again for this utmost basic design requirement for any Chat application. One needs to have the timestamp of messages for a ton of reasons. Yeah, sure keep it hidden by default if your design principle says that for some reason, but make it visible if I long press a chat. What’s going on here, product managers?

Here to ask the same question. What on earth is taking so long for us to get timestamps, one of the most basic and fundamental components of any web app? This is truly bizarre.

Timestamps on each message would be very helpful.

I agree 100%. This is just basic, default behaviour on pretty much any web app these days, especially a chat messaging app!! Come on guys, get your freaking act together!

We definitely need more organizational features for power users, or general accessibility.

I think tagging that can be defined by the user, color coding and timestamps for audit trails would be nice.

+1 just because it really needs to happen :face_holding_back_tears:

Incredibly basic feature missing for two years.

It would be great if this option could be toggled on/off in the settings as I understand not everyone wants this.
I often have very similar conversations so when I use the search feature and it says “said monday” it isn’t very helpful. I need specifics lol
