Support Request: Please Continue Supporting macOS 12 or Provide a Legacy Version with codex

I would like to request continued support for users on macOS Monterey (12.x).

Recent versions of the ChatGPT desktop app no longer run on macOS 12, even though many Intel Macs are still fully functional and cannot officially upgrade to newer versions of macOS.

It would be extremely helpful if OpenAI could:

  • Continue providing security updates for the last macOS 12-compatible version of ChatGPT.
  • Keep an official download page for legacy desktop releases.
  • Clearly document which ChatGPT desktop version is the final release supporting each macOS version.
  • Consider maintaining a lightweight “LTS” desktop client for older but still supported Apple hardware.

Many developers use older Macs as secondary development machines, remote terminals, or dedicated workstations. The browser version works, but the desktop application provides a much better experience with keyboard shortcuts, native integration, and Codex workflows.

If ongoing support isn’t feasible, simply keeping the final compatible installer officially available would already be a significant improvement.

Thank you for considering this request.

Welcome to the Community and thanks for the thoughtful request, @seanevocorde. Older Intel Macs are still useful for plenty of development workflows, so this is a fair suggestion.

I’m passing it along to the team for logging, including continued Monterey support, access to legacy installers, clearer compatibility details, and the idea of a lightweight LTS client. Even keeping the final macOS 12-compatible installer available would be helpful.
