I’d like to share a simple product concept for OpenAI’s future AI hardware: a Shoulder-Mounted “Companion Mode.”
The idea
Instead of using an AI device only on a desk or carrying it in a pocket, it could attach to a lightweight magnetic shoulder dock.
Placing the device on the shoulder could create several interesting interaction possibilities:

Mechanical movement becomes personality
If the device includes moving or rotating components, the shoulder gives it enough space to turn naturally toward the user when spoken to, or look around the environment. -
Better private audio
Being close to the user’s ear and mouth could allow low-volume directional audio and clearer microphone pickup, even outdoors. -
Natural hands-free vision
A shoulder-mounted camera would roughly share the user’s viewing direction, which could be useful for navigation, shopping, object recognition, translation, and contextual assistance. -
A middle ground between a pocket device and a wearable pin
The shoulder provides more physical space than a tiny wearable, potentially allowing a larger battery, better thermal management, and more expressive movement.
The mount itself could be extremely simple: a magnetic base integrated into a backpack strap, shoulder strap, jacket, or optional accessory.
To me, the interesting part is not just making the device wearable. It is giving an ambient AI a natural physical place beside the user, where movement, vision, and audio can work together.
A small device. A closer companion.
