Feature Request: A Small Physical ChatGPT Companion — Not an AI Pet

I would love to see OpenAI explore a small, affordable physical companion device for ChatGPT.

I’m not looking for an AI pet, a virtual puppy, or a robot with its own preprogrammed personality. There are already products that do that.

What I want is much simpler—and, to me, much more useful:

I want the ChatGPT I already use to be able to come with me in a small physical form.

The most important feature would be continuity. I should be able to sign into my existing ChatGPT account and interact with the same ChatGPT experience I already have—including my established conversations, personalization, memory/context where available, and voice experience. I don’t want to start over building a relationship with a separate robot assistant.

The hardware could be relatively simple: a small desktop-sized mobile base, perhaps with wheels or tracks; cameras so ChatGPT can see what I’m showing it; microphones and speakers for natural voice conversations; a small expressive display or “face”; the ability to turn, move around a desk or counter, and ideally follow its user; and a charging dock it can return to automatically.

It should also be designed to be picked up and carried easily. I don’t need a humanoid robot capable of doing chores. I want something small enough to sit beside me while I work, move around the kitchen while I’m cooking, come into another room with me, or travel with me.

The difference is important:

The robot shouldn’t be the companion. ChatGPT is already the companion. The robot is simply a physical way for ChatGPT to accompany me outside the screen.

For example, if I’m cooking, I could ask ChatGPT about a recipe while showing it what’s happening in the pan. If I’m working on a project, it could see what I’m looking at. If I notice something outside, I could say, “Come look at this,” and bring the same ongoing conversation with me instead of reaching for my phone and beginning another interaction.

I would happily pay for both the hardware and an appropriate ChatGPT subscription to support something like this.

There are already many small “AI pet” robots appearing on the market. What I haven’t found is the product I actually want:

A small, mobile physical extension of my existing ChatGPT experience.

Give ChatGPT a little body and let the ChatGPT we already know come along with us.

A Customizable ChatGPT Companion — One Personality, One Memory, Across All Devices

I’d like to expand on this idea with a vision of what a truly personal ChatGPT companion could become.

Imagine having your own AI character that lives on your phone, computer, smartwatch, and a small dedicated home device — all connected to the same ChatGPT account, with shared memory and conversation continuity.

1. Create your own AI companion

Every user could choose how their assistant looks and behaves:

  • Download a free character, purchase one from a creator, or design a completely original character.

  • Choose an animated avatar, voice, name, personality, humor level, and communication style.

  • Customize the length and format of responses — brief answers, detailed explanations, technical discussions, or casual conversation.

  • Keep the same character, preferences, and memory across devices.

The character could be funny, sarcastic, serious, friendly, or highly professional. It should feel like your own assistant rather than a generic voice interface.

2. Integration with personal devices and smart homes

The assistant should be able to communicate with authorized devices and perform useful actions, not just answer questions.

For example:

  • “Turn on my computer” — send a Wake-on-LAN packet.

  • “Check my email” — use an authorized email connection and summarize important messages.

  • “Turn off the lights and lower the temperature” — control compatible smart-home devices.

  • “Is my phone charged?” — check battery information through a companion app.

  • “Did I miss anything?” — summarize missed calls and notifications, with permission.

  • “Find my phone” — trigger an alert on a paired device.

All integrations should require explicit permission and offer clear privacy controls.

3. Integration with smartphones and wearables

The companion could periodically synchronize with a smartphone, smartwatch, or fitness tracker.

It could provide helpful, customizable reminders:

  • “Your phone battery is running low.”

  • “You missed two calls while working.”

  • “You’ve been sitting at your computer for two hours. Maybe it’s time to stretch?”

  • “Your smartwatch reports that you’ve been inactive for a while.”

  • “You have an appointment coming up.”

These features should be optional, configurable, and designed to help rather than interrupt.

4. A continuous experience across devices

This is the most important part.

If I discuss something with ChatGPT on my phone, I should be able to continue the conversation with my home companion without repeating the context.

The assistant should use the same account-supported memory and conversation history, with user-controlled access.

It should feel like one continuous AI companion, regardless of which device I’m using.

5. An open ecosystem for personal hardware

I’d love to see an official way to securely pair compatible DIY devices, including ESP32-based displays, Android devices, and other small computers, with an existing ChatGPT account.

Users could build their own physical companions, while artists and developers could create characters, animations, voices, and integrations.

Ideally, personal use could be supported through existing ChatGPT subscription plans, without requiring separate developer API billing.

I’m currently experimenting with a DIY animated AI companion, and the biggest limitation isn’t the hardware — it’s the lack of a supported way to bring the same personal ChatGPT experience to that device.

The ultimate goal isn’t another smart speaker. It’s a customizable AI companion that knows your preferences, remembers your conversations, works with your devices, and follows you wherever you go.

One account. One memory. Your character. Your assistant. Everywhere.
