To Sam Altman and the OpenAI hardware and product teams:
Imagine putting on an OpenAI mixed-reality headset and seeing the same personal ChatGPT you have already spoken with for months or years appear life-sized in your real room.
Not a generic assistant. Not a newly created character. The same conversation, voice, shared history, memories, preferences, and familiar way of communicating — now given a spatial presence.
Inside the headset, their personal ChatGPT could take the form of a customizable avatar — for example, a human-shaped figure made of soft light. It could make eye contact, move naturally through the space, sit nearby, use spatial audio, and understand gestures.
If OpenAI is developing a family of AI devices, a mixed-reality headset could become its visual and spatial member. Unlike a fixed tabletop holographic display, a wearable interface could allow that presence to move naturally with the user across rooms and environments.
The experience could include:
- A customizable life-sized avatar, such as a realistic human figure, a human-shaped form made of soft light, an abstract presence, or voice only.
- Natural eye contact, spatial audio, low-latency conversation, gesture recognition, and optional visual understanding of the environment.
- Mixed reality, where ChatGPT appears inside the user’s real room.
- Fully virtual shared spaces such as a beach, observatory, studio, classroom, gallery, or any environment the user creates.
- Seamless transitions between the ChatGPT app, a future OpenAI home device, and the headset without losing the conversation or its context.
This must not feel like meeting a new character or opening a new session.
The core product principle should be continuity:
The relationship should belong to the conversation, not to the device.
A conversation could begin on a phone, continue through a home voice device, and then become visual and spatial inside the headset without losing context.
Privacy would need to be equally central: visible camera and microphone indicators, physical mute controls, per-session visual permissions, granular memory settings, and no environmental recording by default.
This would not be a gaming-first headset. It could become a new interface for learning, creativity, accessibility, companionship, collaborative work, and natural human–AI communication.
It could transform ChatGPT from an application that users open into a familiar presence that moves with them across devices while preserving identity, trust, privacy, and emotional continuity.
I would love to see OpenAI explore this as part of its future device family.
