Secure Conversation Handoff Codes for ChatGPT

Feature Request: Secure Conversation Handoff Codes for ChatGPT

Category: ChatGPT Feature Request

Overview

I would like to propose a feature that allows users to transfer or continue a ChatGPT conversation in another browser tab or session using a short, temporary handoff code.

For example, a user could generate a code such as “xusnb166-ww” in an existing conversation, enter it in another browser session, and continue from the same context without manually finding or copying the conversation.

Problem Statement

Users sometimes switch browser tabs, devices, or sessions, including between logged-in and logged-out environments. Continuing a specific conversation can be inconvenient, particularly when users want to preserve their existing context and workflow.

A simple handoff mechanism could make this process faster and more accessible.

Proposed Solution

Introduce a “Generate Handoff Code” option within the ChatGPT conversation menu.

The workflow could be:

1. The user selects “Generate Handoff Code” in an existing conversation.

2. ChatGPT generates a short, unique, temporary code.

3. The user enters the code in another supported ChatGPT session.

4. The destination session opens the corresponding conversation, subject to the user’s authorization and the selected access mode.

The feature could support both read-only access and authenticated continuation, depending on the user’s permissions.

Security and Privacy Considerations

Security should be a core part of the design:

- Codes should be unpredictable, temporary, and rate-limited.

- Users should understand whether they are sharing a conversation or transferring access to it.

- Sensitive conversations should require appropriate authentication.

- Handoff codes should grant access only to the intended conversation.

- Codes should be revocable, and unauthorized attempts should be restricted.

The implementation should follow the principle of least privilege.

Expected Benefits

- Easier continuation of conversations across tabs and devices.

- Less manual copying and searching.

- Better continuity for coding, studying, research, and professional workflows.

- A simple alternative to navigating long conversation URLs.

Closing

I believe a secure conversation handoff mechanism could improve ChatGPT’s usability while maintaining appropriate privacy and access controls.

I would appreciate consideration of this proposal as a potential product enhancement.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
