Native Session Handoff Between ChatGPT Conversations

I would like to suggest a simple feature for long-running ChatGPT workflows: a native Session Handoff between conversations.

The problem

For longer projects, a ChatGPT conversation can eventually reach its maximum conversation length.

At that point, ChatGPT currently displays a message such as:

“You’ve reached the maximum length for this conversation, but you can keep talking by starting a new chat.”

Starting a new chat solves the conversation-length limitation, but it also breaks the continuity of the work. The new conversation does not automatically inherit the useful state accumulated in the previous one.

In my own development workflow, I use ChatGPT with GitHub as the main interface for discussing and working through a project.

When I reach this limit, I currently handle the transition manually:

ChatGPT + GitHub → long working session → handoff summary → new ChatGPT conversation

Before leaving the old conversation, I ask ChatGPT to create a structured summary containing everything the next session needs to continue the work.

I then start a fresh conversation, provide that handoff, reconnect the same project context, and continue.

This works surprisingly well.

The main limitation is that the process is entirely manual.

Proposal: Native Session Handoff

ChatGPT could provide a “Continue in a new conversation” or “Create session handoff” action.

Instead of copying the entire conversation into the new context, ChatGPT would generate a compact structured checkpoint containing the information that is actually useful for continuing the work.

For example:

  • Current objective

  • Important context

  • Decisions already made

  • Relevant files or sources

  • Constraints and preferences

  • Approaches already attempted

  • Approaches intentionally rejected

  • Current state of the work

  • Known problems

  • Remaining tasks

  • Recommended next action

The new conversation would then start with this state already available.

Why not simply increase the context window?

Larger context windows are useful, but they do not completely solve this problem.

Any sufficiently long-running project can eventually reach a conversation limit.

A native handoff would make continuity independent from the lifetime of one conversation.

Instead of trying to preserve every message forever, ChatGPT could preserve the current useful state of the work.

This could also make new conversations cleaner and reduce irrelevant historical context.

A lightweight implementation could already be useful

This does not necessarily require a complex persistent project system.

Even a simple workflow would already be valuable:

  1. Click Create handoff

  2. ChatGPT generates a structured continuation summary

  3. Click Continue in new chat

  4. A new conversation opens with the handoff already attached or inserted

Users can already approximate this manually today.

The feature would simply standardize a workflow that ChatGPT is already capable of performing.

Why I think this is broadly useful

Although I personally use this mostly for software development, the same problem exists for many long-running conversations:

  • research

  • writing

  • planning

  • learning

  • document analysis

  • creative projects

  • software development

A conversation can remain temporary while the state of the work remains continuous.

I think making Session Handoff a first-class ChatGPT feature would significantly improve long-running workflows without requiring every conversation to grow indefinitely.
