I would like to suggest a feature for users who reach the maximum practical length of a ChatGPT conversation.
Please add a simple “Continue in New Chat” option that carries the important context from the existing conversation into a new chat so the user does not have to start over.
Some conversations become long-running workspaces containing hundreds of messages, screenshots, uploaded files, troubleshooting history, decisions, preferences, completed steps, reference numbers, and ongoing tasks. When a conversation eventually becomes too large or reaches a system/context limit, starting a completely new chat can mean losing a tremendous amount of useful continuity.
Ideally, when a conversation is approaching or reaches its limit, ChatGPT could offer a button such as “Continue in New Chat.”
Selecting it could create a new conversation and automatically carry over a structured handoff from the original conversation, such as:
• A detailed continuity/handoff summary
• Important decisions and completed steps
• Current task status and exactly where the conversation left off
• Relevant user preferences and standing instructions
• Important reference numbers, dates, names, settings, and other details
• Ongoing tasks or unresolved issues
• References to important uploaded files, screenshots, or other attachments when technically possible
• A link or reference back to the original conversation
The new chat should clearly indicate that it is a continuation of the previous conversation rather than an unrelated new chat.
It would also be helpful if the user could review the handoff before the new conversation is created. For example, ChatGPT could generate a continuity summary and allow the user to confirm it, edit it, or add anything important that should be carried forward.
This would be especially useful for long troubleshooting sessions, research projects, support cases, technical work, planning, and other conversations that may continue for days or weeks.
The goal would not necessarily be to copy every single message into the new chat. Instead, ChatGPT could preserve the information that is needed to continue accurately while starting the new conversation with a fresh context window.
This could also reduce mistakes caused by manually starting a new chat and trying to recreate the history from memory. Important completed steps, previous findings, failed troubleshooting attempts, user preferences, and unresolved issues would be much less likely to get lost or repeated.
For users who rely on ChatGPT for long-running projects, a conversation can become more like a workspace than a simple chat. There should be a graceful way to move that workspace forward when the original conversation becomes too large.
A “Continue in New Chat” handoff feature would make long conversations much easier to manage while preserving continuity and avoiding the need to start over.
Thank you for considering this feature.
