Request for Official Linux Desktop App for ChatGPT

Hello OpenAI team,

I would like to propose the development of an official Linux desktop application for ChatGPT. As Linux is a widely used operating system among developers and tech professionals, who make up a significant portion of ChatGPT’s user base, an official Linux app would enhance the experience for this community.

While the web interface is functional, a native desktop app would offer several advantages:

  • Improved Performance: A dedicated app could provide faster performance and better resource management compared to a browser-based solution.
  • Better System Integration: A native app could leverage Linux-specific features, like custom keyboard shortcuts, better window management, and enhanced notification systems.
  • Convenience: A standalone app would provide a smoother experience, reducing the need to keep a browser tab open and offering quick access to ChatGPT from the desktop environment.

Although Linux has a smaller desktop market share compared to Windows and macOS, it is still a popular platform, particularly among developers who rely on tools like ChatGPT for coding, debugging, and research. By developing a Linux desktop app, OpenAI could strengthen its relationship with the Linux community and enhance the experience for a large and dedicated user base.

Thank you for considering this suggestion. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best regards,
Orange

I should add that cool features like the advanced voice mode and screen share aren’t available for the browser. Having a dedicated desktop app would allow these functions to work on Linux.

I very much agree that Linux should be treated the same as Mac and Windows please. We are out there and we do need this.

An official Linux desktop application for ChatGPT would be a game-changer for the community. Many Linux users, especially developers and researchers, work in environments where browser-based tools are not ideal due to security policies or workflow interruptions. A native app could address these challenges by providing:

  • Better Performance:
  • Offline or Limited Connectivity Features: A desktop ap
  • Broader Adoption: Supporting Linux shows OpenAI’s commitment to a diverse, tech-savvy user base

By investing in a Linux app, OpenAI can tap into a highly engaged user segment that values innovation and open platforms. It’s a win-win for both the company and the community

I strongly agree with you, this would be great to get such a solution
We’re not a fraction of the user base, as Linux is widely used by tech professionals

Hi, community!

I’d like to join the request for an official ChatGPT Desktop version for Linux. As a programmer, I know that Linux is widely used by developers, researchers, and technical professionals.

It’s also encouraging to see that the ChatGPT source code already includes references to Linux platforms. This suggests that much of the groundwork might already be in place, making the development of an official version even more feasible.

Having a native version of ChatGPT for Linux would bring several benefits:

  • Adoption in technical environments: Linux is the backbone of many development tools, servers, and AI ecosystems. Including ChatGPT in this environment would boost its adoption in professional settings.

  • Optimization and compatibility: An official version would ensure a seamless experience, avoiding the current challenges of using Wine or other third-party solutions.

  • Better feedback from the community: Linux users, who are often technically proficient, could provide valuable feedback to further improve the tool.

Thank you for considering this request. I’m confident that many in the Linux community would greatly appreciate this step.

Best regards

Maybe we make our own that uses the APIs for anthropic and openai and is cheaper than both subscriptions combined? If we make it for Windows and Mac too using flutter, maybe we get a lot of users jumping ship.

Hi,
I also strongly see the place of chatGPT in Linux as empty, and I must point out that the web and Windows applications have a big problem for each request, all the previous information on the chat page is re-checked due to the non-optimization of js listeners. In long chats, which all developers will surely encounter, it heavily consumes hardware resources (RAM and CPU) and causes lag.
