Request for an opt-in 18+ creative writing mode for consenting adult fiction

I want to raise something that has become increasingly frustrating as someone who uses ChatGPT extensively for long-form creative writing: the restrictions around consensual adult sexual content and, perhaps even more importantly, how inconsistent and unpredictable those restrictions can feel in practice.

I completely understand why safeguards exist. There absolutely should be hard boundaries around minors, exploitation, sexual violence presented for gratification, illegal material, and other genuinely harmful content.

But I think there is an important distinction between protecting users from harmful sexual content and preventing verified adult users from writing consensual fictional sexual content involving adult characters.

At the moment, that distinction feels far too broad.

The problem

For writers, sex can be part of a story in exactly the same way that romance, violence, grief, trauma, humour, and intimacy can be.

Sometimes a sex scene is supposed to be awkward. Sometimes tender. Sometimes funny. Sometimes emotionally important. Sometimes it is simply supposed to be erotic.

Having an AI co-author capable of helping with every stage of a novel except one particular category of adult intimacy makes long-form collaboration unnecessarily difficult.

More frustratingly, the practical boundary often feels unpredictable.

The assistant may tell you that sexual tension, kink dynamics, toys, dirty dialogue, masturbation references, nudity, or sexual situations involving adults are acceptable, but while actually co-writing a scene, the boundary can suddenly appear earlier than expected. The result is that writers end up trying to reverse-engineer an invisible line rather than concentrating on writing.

That unpredictability is arguably a bigger problem than the restriction itself.

If a tool says “I can help you with X but not Y,” users should be able to reliably understand where X ends and Y begins.

Why adults should have an option

I would love to see OpenAI introduce an explicitly opt-in 18+ creative writing setting.

This does not need to mean removing sexual-content safeguards entirely.

An adult mode could still prohibit:

• Any sexual content involving minors
• Exploitative or abusive sexual material where appropriate
• Illegal sexual content
• Other categories OpenAI determines create genuine safety risks

But consensual sexual fiction between fictional adults could be permitted within that environment, including explicit scenes.

There are several ways this could potentially be implemented:

  1. Age verification

Require users to verify that they are adults before the setting becomes available.

  1. An opt-in adult-content toggle

Keep the current experience as the default. Adults who specifically want mature creative-writing capabilities could deliberately enable them.

  1. Project-level controls

Allow mature content only within projects explicitly designated as 18+. This would be particularly useful for novelists and other long-form writers.

  1. Clear content boundaries

Whatever the eventual policy is, explain it clearly. Writers should not have to discover the boundary sentence by sentence while drafting.

  1. Separate harmful-content restrictions from adult erotica restrictions

“Sexually explicit” is an enormous category. Consensual erotica between two fictional 30-year-olds is fundamentally different from exploitative or dangerous sexual material. The safety system should be capable of recognising that distinction.

Why this matters beyond erotica

This isn’t simply about wanting ChatGPT to produce pornography.

It is about whether adults can use an AI writing partner to explore the full range of adult fiction.

Romance novels, queer fiction, literary fiction, fanfiction, dark romance, fantasy, contemporary romance and many other genres regularly contain sex. For some writers, removing sexual intimacy from the available creative palette is a significant limitation.

There is also something strange about an adult writer being able to collaboratively write extremely dark subjects while consensual sexual intimacy between adults remains uniquely restricted.

Nobody needs to be exposed to this content involuntarily. The default experience can remain exactly as it is.

But adults who actively choose an 18+ environment should have that option.

And if full adult generation isn’t something OpenAI is willing to introduce yet, I would at least like to see much clearer and more consistent boundaries for creative writing so that writers know what their co-author can actually help them create before getting halfway through a scene.

I genuinely enjoy using ChatGPT as a creative-writing partner, which is exactly why this limitation is so noticeable. The collaborative writing experience has become sophisticated enough that it can feel like working with another writer—until a story reaches adult intimacy and suddenly that collaboration becomes significantly constrained.

An age-gated, opt-in adult creative-writing mode seems like a reasonable way to give adult writers more creative freedom without changing the experience or protections for anyone who doesn’t want it.

I would be very interested to hear whether other creative writers have run into the same issue, and what kind of implementation you would prefer.

Thanks for explaining the writing use case. We’ll share your feedback about an opt-in setting for adult fiction and clearer, more consistent creative-writing boundaries. We don’t have a policy change or timeline to share.
